Second Period Surge Powers Laker Men’s Ice Hockey

Morrisville, NY – The Oswego State men’s ice hockey team used a six-goal second period to rout Morrisville State 9-2 on the road Friday night.

Oswego’s win improves its record to 14-4-1 overall and 7-3-1 in SUNYAC play while Morrisville drops to 5-14-2, 2-10-1.

Oswego scored five goals in the first 8:40 of the second period, adding to the 2-0 advantage it held after the first.

With less than a minute remaining in the second, the Lakers added a sixth goal of the period to hold an 8-2 lead heading to the final break.

As a team, Oswego outshot the Mustangs 45-15 on the night.

Mike Montagna led the way for the Lakers, recording a career-high five points on a goal and four assists. Montagna assisted on Oswego’s first two goals by David Titanic and Nick Rivait. He added to his point total with the Lakers’ third goal, scoring on an assist from Kenny Neil that sparked the five-goal spurt.

The Fulton Native then added an assist on Stephen Johnson’s power-play goal before capping his night on Oswego’s final goal. Montagna returned the favor to Neil for the earlier assist, helping Neil notch a goal late in the third period.

Titanic finished with a two-point night, tallying a second goal at 4:03 of the second during the Lakers’ barrage of goals.

Shawn Hulshof scored Oswego’s second goal in the five-goal span, beating the Cortland goalie on a pass from Matt Galati.

The Lakers’ seventh and eighth goals came from the Dylan Smith to Krystian Yorke connection. Yorke setup Smith with a goal that completed the team’s eight minute stretch of five goals. Smith returned the favor, assisting on Yorke’s first career-goal at 19:06 in the second.

Oswego and Morrisville will meet for another SUNYAC tilt at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
