Amanda Austin from Sigma Delta Tau sorority, SUNY Oswego, lost someone special in her life to a car crash.
She suggested to her sorority that they host a volleyball tournament to raise money for teen driving safety in honor of her friend, age 18, a passenger in the vehicle.
The tournament, held April 27 on campus, was a huge success, with 16 teams participating and netting more than $500 in proceeds.
Diane Oldenburg, a board member from the Oswego County Traffic Safety Board, accepts the donation.
Young women in the sorority attended the Jacy Good presentation on distracted driving, held at the college last March, and were inspired to choose the Oswego County Traffic Safety Board to help with their outreach to teen drivers and passengers.
Austin said, “We are happy to know that this donation will be going toward safe teen driver and passenger awareness and will help to remind young people to hang up and drive.”
The sorority plans to make the tournament an annual event.
