The Port of Oswego Authority (POA) has partnered with the Oswego Yacht Club (OYC), by donating a slip in its new Goble Marina for the OYC “Try Sailing” program, said William Scriber, POA executive director and CEO. OSWEGO, NY – The Port of Oswego Authority (POA) has partnered with the Oswego Yacht Club (OYC), by donating a slip in its new Goble Marina for the OYC “Try Sailing” program, said William Scriber, POA executive director and CEO.
“Part of the Port’s mission is to promote tourism and recreation,” said Scriber. “We are pleased to partner with the yacht club to help them with their sailing program. Our new 24-slip Goble Marina also provides a docking area at no charge for the H. Lee White Museum’s boat for lighthouse tours.”
Francis Enwright, chair of the POA board said: “Oswego’s history is maritime and boating. This is a key focus for our board, and it continues to drive us to invest in and improve that experience for boaters here in Oswego.”
2024 marked the fifth season for OYC’s free Try Sailing program, said Tom Doran, OYC member and Try Sailing instructor. “To date, more than 80 participants have received classroom instruction followed by an on the water session of actual sailing. Club members have supported the program by hosting participants on their sailboats, while other sailing opportunities—including racing—have been conducted on one of OYC’s 24-foot sailboats.
“The new Goble marina is a perfect setting for the Try Sailing program. A U.S./Canadian research study shows that, over the past five years, The Port of Oswego Authority made a $513 million impact on the local and regional economy and supported 2,229 jobs by its maritime activity. The Port of Oswego generated $201.2 million in wages, salaries, and local consumption expenditures for the regional economy. The port is home to 14 companies that utilize the harbor for domestic and international operations, as well as the Oswego Marina, the Goble Marina, H. Lee White Marine Museum, and historic maritime district. The port supports nearly 120 vessels, allowing more than one million tons of cargo to pass through the port on an annual basis.
