Student-athletes in the Altmar-Parish-Williamstown Central School District were recently honored at the district’s second captains’ brunch of the 2012-13 school year.
APW Athletic Director Bert Conklin coordinates the seasonal brunches to recognize varsity team captains for their achievements both on and off their respective playing fields and serve as a time for the captains to examine, develop and strengthen their leadership abilities.
Captains from the winter indoor track, volleyball, girls’ basketball, boys’ basketball, cheerleading, and wrestling teams were represented at the recent brunch.
Conklin and the group of student-athletes talked about the essence of leadership and collectively reviewed some of the different responsibilities and attributes that characterize a good team captain.
One attribute that Conklin spoke specifically about was the ability of a team captain to step up when he/she needs to, saying, “Big time players make big time plays.”
Conklin also played an excerpt from an interview with Duke Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski where the coach spoke about the importance of picking the right leaders, selecting players that have heart and how such leaders can bring out the very best in others.
Additionally, the students watched the 1993 Jim Valvano ESPY Arthur Ashe Courage and Humanitarian Award acceptance speech where he talked about never giving up.
