OSWEGO, NY – The next stop for the Oswego boys’ varsity volleyball team is the Class A Section III Championship matchup.
On Wednesday night the top seeded OHS Bucs scored a three-game sweep of fourth seeded Fayetteville-Manlius.
Oswego will square off against number three seed Cicero-North Syracuse at the CNS gym on Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. for the right to advance to the state tournament.
The Bucs captured the semifinal round with wins of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-23.
Coach Mike Shea said, “Our team showed that we can still win an important game even when we’re not playing our best. Kevin Carpentier did a great job of giving our hitters something to work with even on poor passes. When we passed well early on, we were able to run a fast, effective offense that got a lot of guys involved.”
Continuing he said, “The guys are forgetting some of the fundamentals. We need improved passing. The teams we’ll play from this point on all serve tougher than the team we played tonight did. We’ll need to get better at that.”
In the first game the Bucs were pretty much in control and were up 22-13 at one point. However, FM came back to close to 23-19, but the Bucs were able to cement the victory.
The second game once again saw Oswego dominate early and held a 21-15 advantage. However, FM started the long uphill climb back and nearly overcame the deficit. The Hornets closed to 23-20, but once against couldn’t make a late sustained rally.
However, the third game was a classic as it was tied at 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 22 before the Bucs won 25-23.
Kevin Carpentier had 40 assists, three kills, three blocks, an ace and four gigs while Dylan Lavner had 13 kills, a block, three assists and five digs. Ryan Patrick finished with six kills and 11 digs while Brennan Richardson had an ace and seven digs. Mike Thompson finished with nine kills, a block, an assist, two aces and four digs.
Also contributing were Aaron Baxter with a kill, Josh Ewig with a kill and block, Jeremy Galvin with three digs, Justin Peterson with three kills and Connor Riley with a kill, three blocks and a dig.
The Bucs moved to 14-1.
Swimmers Fall in Last Dual
The Lady Bucs lost a close meet to Liverpool 99 – 84. Their record is now 5-4.
Freshman Mayra Lopez and Brenna Riley were each winners in the meet. Mayra swam a lifetime best in the 200 IM to win the event, while Brenna took first in the 500 free.
Other outstanding swims included Mayra’s second place finish in the 500 freestyle behind Brenna.
Senior Kaila McClelland’s second place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:08.74) and the 100 butterfly (1:10.07) were also great swims. Eighth grader Mariah Metcalf also had a great meet.
Mariah placed second in both the 50 free (26.95) and the 100 breaststroke (1:15.23). Her time of 1:15.23 is a lifetime best by over a second.
JV Boys’ Volleyball Captures League/Tourney Crown
The 2011 JV Boys’ Volleyball team entered the end of the year league tourney as the #1 seed and undefeated in league play. The goal of the competition, simple, be the team to ruin the Bucs’ season.
Oswego was placed with FM and CNS for morning pool play.
The Bucs squeaked by the Hornets 25-23, 25-20, then proceeded to defeat CNS 25-16, 25-10. Advancing without a loss, allowed the Bucs a bye to the semifinal round.
In the semis, the Bucs were matched up with Central Square in one set to 30 points. The Bucs won easily 30-16 and solidified the opportunity to play for the title.
In the meantime, FM had crossed over to the other pool and was able to upend the #2 seed Baldwinsville Bees to set up a rematch from the morning, a chance to defend their JV title from last season, and one last shot at the Bucs.
The finals was set for 2 out of 3 to 25, winner take all. Riding the high from upsetting B’ville, was FM primed for the upset.
Not today, the Bucs took control from the get go and never looked back claiming the title 25-16, 25-15. Mission Accomplished!
The Bucs ended the season 14-0 in league play, 19-1 overall.
Jayvee Football Team Falls in Final
The Oswego Buccaneers took Joseph Wilber Field for their final game of the 2011-2012 season and lost 30-14 to Fulton as the two teams were evenly matched and was a highly competitive game.
The Buccaneer offense came out with intensity and was able to drive the ball all day. The Bucs were able to compile one 173 rushing yards during Saturday’s contest.
Leading the rushing attack was Lee Williams once again. Williams found his running capability and potential nearing the end of the season with improvements on making cuts and picking up his speed. Williams tore up Wilber Field with rushing for 85 yards.
Williams was also able to find the endzone twice on Saturday.
At the end of the first half Williams took a kickoff to the house in Hester fashion.
The other score was off of a solid run, which was aided by tremendous blocking from the offense line. Other key offense weapons for the Oswego Buccaneers were Justin Canale and Malik Winford. Both Canale and Malik rushed close to 40 yards against the Red Raiders of Fulton.
Canale also had the lone catch for the day. Canale caught a pass from Ben Annal and picked up 20 yards.
Defensively the Buccaneers hounded the Fulton Red Raiders all game.
The Red Raiders offense backs were typically swarmed by a sea of blue when they touched the ball.
On top of his amazing offensive ability, Williams also came to hit Saturday. Williams managed to assist on five tackles and come up with five solo tackles as well. Another defensive stand out was Nick Boone. Big Boone took down two backs on his own and then assisted on six tackles. Steve Hart had another tremendous game at defensive end. Hart assisted on six tackles and came up with a solo tackle as well.
The solid defensive pass coverage can be accredited to Cory Moshier and Dalton Tracy.
Other defensive stands were Justin Canale, Jake Lofthouse, Kory McTague, Greg Mayer, Garrett Dunsmoor and Jake Rodriguez.
Despite the Buccaneers solid efforts on Saturday they were not able to capture the win. Fulton pulled away late in the third quarter to end up winning the game.
