The Oswego Varsity Boys Soccer team began it’s 2009 season in convincing fashion by beating host West Genesee 6-1 on Wednesday night.
The Bucs got on the scoreboard just 12:15 into the contest when Jeff Schmidt headed a corner kick past Wildcat goalie Dylan Condon to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead. Nate Pacheco picked up the assist on the goal. Then just a minute and a half later Ryan Ramsey found the back of the net after a scramble in front of the Wildcat goal to give the Bucs a 2-0. The Bucs rounded out their first half scoring less than three minutes later when Nate Pacheco sent a well placed pass to the foot of Aaron Marsallo who raced in on the West Genesee goal. Marsallo finished the play by placing a low driven shot to the far post to give the visiting Bucs a 3-0 cushion.
Coach Don Fronk said, “We started the game very well and controlled much of the middle of the field, this allowed us to build the lead we did in the first half.”
The second half began in a similar fashion to the first with the Bucs getting a goal 14:35 into the half to give them a 4-0 lead. The goal was set up by the hard work of the two forwards as Stephen Auyer fed Patrick Holland in front of the goal, with Patrick finishing off the play to add to the Buccaneer lead. The Wildcats struck back seven minutes later as Kyle Ivers found the head of Jake Southerland who beat keeper Matt Skinner for West Genesee’s lone tally on the night. Stephen Auyer then rounded out the Buc scoring with an unassisted goal at the 28:59 mark and a goal off an assist from Aaron Marsallo with just under 3 minutes to play.
Fronk noted, “This was a great start to the season for us, the boys have been working very hard for the last two weeks and all that hard work paid off for them tonight. Our defensive unit of Wesley Ihlow, Jeff Schmidt and Joe Hart came up big to help limit their chances on their counters. Goalie’s Matt Skinner (7 saves) and Josh Baer (4 saves) were solid in goal making the saves we needed them to make. We still have things to work on but this puts us on the right path toward meeting our team goals for the season.”
