OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s soccer team (4-9-1, 3-4-1 SUNYAC) weren’t able to capture a fourth straight conference win as they fell to host Brockport (8-6-0, 6-1-0 SUNYAC), 5-1, in Saturday’s State University of New York Athletic Conference matchup.
Due to a tie between Fredonia and Potsdam on Saturday, the Blue Devils moved into a tie with the Lakers for fifth in the conference standings.
Oswego State holds the tiebreaker between the two, with a 2-0 win over Fredonia on Oct. 5.
Against Brockport on Saturday, the Lakers’ lone goal was scored by J.J. McLoughlin (Jr., Goshen, N.Y.) off a corner kick by Ryan Purdy (So., Stormville, N.Y.) in the 56th minute. However, the Golden Eagles had already netted five markers to take a 5-0 lead, making a comeback impossible.
Brockport scored four first-half goals against Laker goalie P.J. Goodwin (Sr., Baldwinsville, N.Y.), with the first coming on an own goal in the game’s 6th minute. Brockport’s Kevin Dorn then notched his sixth and seventh goal of the season to give the Golden Eagles a 3-0 edge.
Nick Cafarelli scored the fourth and final goal of the first half for Brockport in the final minute of the period. At the half, the Lakers made the switch at goalie, sending in senior captain Pat Breen (Palmyra, N.Y.) for the second half.
McLoughlin’s goal came under a minute after Paul Altobelli made it a five-goal margin for Brockport off a pass from Dorn, who tallied five points on the day. The Golden Eagles outshot the Lakers 22-8, with a resounding 17-4 edge in shots on target.
Breen and Goodwin both finished the game with seven saves. Brockport’s Max Drexler registered three stops in the win.
The Lakers travel to Cortland next Saturday to play the Red Dragons at 1 p.m. in a game with huge playoff implications. After next weekend, the Lakers can finish as high as fourth in the conference or fall out of the playoff race as the last few postseason spots are still up for grabs.
