OSWEGO, NY – Oswego varsity boys’ basketball and hockey were successful in recent games.
Meanwhile, the girls’ varsity basketball team trailed early and was unable to make up a large deficit and the jayvee Lady Buc five gained the eleventh win of the year.
Varsity Boys Play Solid All Around Game
The Oswego varsity boys’ basketball team defeated the home standing Baldwinsville Bees on Wednesday night, 77-66.
The visiting Bucs played their best half of basketball to begin the game.
Coach Brian Haessig said, “We jumped out to a 23-8 first quarter lead behind Josh Gillard’s 10 points and Mike Thompson’s eight, as well as terrific team ‘D.’ We were running our offense to perfection and our press created several B’Ville turnovers.“
Oswego continued to roll in the second quarter, leading at the half 39-15.
The fired up Bees came out strong in the third, outscoring the Bucs 24-14 to cut into the lead. A combination of foul trouble to Jake Metcalf and Thompson, as well as poor ball security allowed the Bees to inch closer.
Dustin Sands’ 10 points in the quarter allowed Oswego to keep a comfortable lead. The Bucs converted 18 of 26 free throws in the fourth quarter to help secure the hard-fought win.
Great offensive balance and team play were keys to the victory.
Josh Gillard led the Bucs with 18, including three 3-pointers.
He was followed by Ryan Patrick with 14, Dustin Sands 12, Jake Metcalf 11, Corey Galletta and Mike Thompson eighth each, Connor Riley four, and Josh McRae two.
The Bucs host Auburn on Friday at Powers Gym before playing host to Hilton in a non-league game on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Buc Hockey in Big Win
The Oswego boys’ hockey team scored a decisive 7-1 win over Auburn on Wednesday night as the fight for a post season play off berth continues.
The Bucs are currently in third place in pursuit of runner up Clinton.
Oswego has two games remaining with Fulton on Friday and at Skaneateles on Saturday at 8 p.m. in a makeup game.
The Bucs won the game with a two goal first period and added three in the second and two more in the third while surrendering the lone goal in the third period.
For the Bucs Austin Tracz had another hat trick while Cody Mariano had two goals while Fred Donabella and David Walpole each had a goal.
In the assist department Josh Sova had four while John Phillips had two and Sean Mooney and Mariano each had one.
In net Josh Cooley had 23 saves while the Auburn goalies Brendan Entenmann and Mike Currier combined for 23 saves for the Maroons.
Girls Varsity Basketball
Baldwinsville had a little too much firepower for the Lady Bucs varsity basketball team as the Bees earned a 47-33 win over Oswego.
The home team dominated the first 16 minutes with a 19-3 first quarter advantage and a 29-9 lead at halftime.
For the 6-10 Bucs Courtney Louis had 12 points while scoring four apiece were Kelsey Ross, Erica Atkins, Becca Martin and Taylor Giglio.
Emily Heagerty and Kelly Chetney had two each. Emily Barlow connected with a foul shot.
Jayvees Win
The Oswego jayvee girls’ basketball team moved to 11-5 on the year with a 46-21 win over Baldwinsville.
The Lady Buccaneers came out strong with heavy pressure on Baldwinsville. With defensive pressure from Madeline Muckey, Julia Lavery and Marguerite Dillon in the front court the Bucs were able to get deflections and turn them into baskets.
Oswego took the lead early in the first quarter and continued to hold that throughout the rest of the game.
Marguerite Dillon was the leading scorer with 14 points, all of which were in the first half.
Reilly Patrick contributed with 9, and Madeline Muckey added 6.
