Defending Champ Is #1 Again: Phelps Wins First of Season at Fulton

By Joe Johnson

Defending track champion Jimmy Phelps drove his J&B Installations Troyer in to victory for the first time on www.cnyjunkcarswanted.com night at Fulton. Phelps started the 35 lap DIRTcar Modified feature in sixth and held off the challenges of former track champion Dale Planck for the win. Other winners included John Pietrowicz in the DIRTcar Sportsman, Dave Mannise in the UMP Street Stocks, Mark Olmstead Jr. in the E&V Energy Rookie Crate Sportsman and Keith Zirbel in the reverse Four Cylinder Enduro.

Kyle Lewis and Tony Steiner brought the 25 car field to the green flag with “The Hitman” Steiner grabbing the lead, only to spin in turn two on the opening circuit bringing out the events only yellow. For the restart Lewis was joined on the front row by Kevin Bates and this time Lewis got the jump and began to put some distance between himself and the rest of the field. Jimmy Phelps quickly moved the 99j into contention disposing of Bates for second and chasing after Lewis. Fourteenth starter Planck was on the move in the RezX racing number 77x moving into sixth on lap three, fifth on lap four and the fourth on lap five. After hitting fourth things got a little tougher for Planck in the form of a three car battle for the lead between Lewis, Phelps and Tom Sears Jr. in the 62s. Lewis was strong on the high side holding off the challenges of Phelps lap after lap until the 12th circuit when Phelps pulled off a classic slide job to take the lead, at the same time Planck got by Sears for third then on the next lap he got by Lewis for second and the battle was on. Planck appeared to be faster but the top was too good and lapped traffic never seemed to come at the right time and he ran the tires off trying to pass Phelps, ultimately settling for second at the line. Sears continued his great season with a strong third place run, extending his track point lead to seven markers over fourth place finisher Alan Johnson. Johnson started the race in thirteenth and worked his way to the front in typical Alan fashion. Willy Decker turned a rare Fulton start into a fifth place run.

Jon Tesoriero grabbed the early lead in the 20-lap DIRTcar Crate Sportsman feature but it would be short lived as Tom Juhl Jr. quickly moved to the outside of the speedway and rapidly moved to the front taking the lead on the eighth go around. By the half way point Juhl was well in front of Tesoriero, John Pietrowicz, Timmy Sears Jr. and Jim Evans who were hooked up in a good battle for second. Pietrowicz finally got by Tesoriero on lap 12 and Chris Hile moved into the top five at the same moment. Just as leader Juhl was hitting lapped traffic AJ Kinsley spun his number 3k in turn four bringing out the yellow. Following the restart Juhl once again opened up an advantage over Pietrowicz and cruised to his second win of the season. Pietrowicz settled for second with Chris Hile third, Tesoriero fourth and Jim Evans rounding out the front five.

After further review, Juhl was found to be 22 pounds light at the scales and was subsequently disqualified.  This gave Pietrowicz the victory.

Quinton Burton took the lead from the front row and began to check out early in the 20 lap UMP Street Stock feature. Dave Mannise started tenth in the 15 car field and quickly moved through the pack , his progress slowed only by one yellow on lap two. Mike Watkins dumped fluid in turn three and Chuck Thomas found it spinning his number 88x bringing out the only yellow of the race. Mannise took over second on the restart and chased after Burton but the red number 30 was strong even pulling away slightly at the half way point. On lap 12 the pair ducked under the lapped car of Deb Whalen on the backstretch then made contact in turn three with Mannise coming out of it all with the lead. Mannise cruised over the final eight circuits for the win, his sixth in eight starts this season at Fulton. Behinf the lead pair a great battle developed third between Jim Wallce, Ron Hawker, Dan Hoffman Sr. and Mitch Pietrowicz. Hawker ultimately got the spot and went after Burton but Burton held on for second. Hawker was third at the stripe, with Dan Hoffman Sr. fourth and Jim Wallace grabbing fifth.

Mark Olmstead Jr. picked up his second win of the season in the E&V Energy Rookie Crate Sportsman 15 lapper. Olmstead worked the outside of the speedway in a race that was slowed by only one caution on lap two for a tangle between lady racer Shannon Jones and Joe Kline. Following Olmstead across the line was the 99 of Chris Pullen, Doug Cook, Katelyn Kane and Scott Fowler.

The 25 lap Four Cylinder Enduro ran in reverse for the first time to the delight of the crowd and in the end Keith Zirbel was he winner over Jerry Herbert, Art Dupra, Jacob Palmiter and Les Baker. Zirbel lapped up to fourth place at the finish.
