Double-Double Pushes Oswego State Women’s Basketball Past Brockport

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Kari Kipper and Kayla Ryan posted over 20 points each and 10 rebounds to push the Oswego State women’s basketball team past visiting Brockport, 83-64, Tuesday night at Max Ziel Gymnasium. Kipper scored another career-high 24 points, while Ryan added 22 for the Lakers, who improved to 11-8 overall and 6-6 in the SUNYAC.  Phoebe Byrnes exploded for 27 points for the Golden Eagles, who dropped to 3-15 overall and 0-11 in the league.

Kipper (Jr., Loudonville, N.Y.) scored 10 of her 24 points in the opening six minutes to help give Oswego State an 18-6 lead. The Golden Eagles withstood the early surge, and began to whittle into the lead as a Byrnes trey made the score 21-15 in favor of the Lakers midway through the stanza. However, Ryan tallied five of Oswego State’s next nine points, which put the home team on top by 15 points with seven minutes to play.

Byrnes kept Brockport within striking distance, though, as she finished the half with 18 points despite the Lakers holding a 39-32 advantage.

Oswego State rattled off the first nine points of the second half to open up a 48-32 lead, but Brockport cut the margin down to 11 points following a three from Desiree Fauvelle with nine minutes left on the clock. However, that would be as close as the Golden Eagles would get as the Lakers cruised to the win.

Meagan Stover (Jr., Lake George, N.Y.) joined Kipper and Ryan in double-digits with 13 points and fell one rebound short of the double-double with nine to go along with four assists.  Oswego State owned a 50-34 advantage on the boards, which included 21 rebounds on the offensive glass, while shooting 38.0 percent (30-for-79) from the floor compared to 33.3 percent (18-for-54) for Brockport.  The Lakers also posted a season-low five turnovers and shot 86.4 percent (19-for-22) from the free throw line.

Kelly Grinnell and Cecilia Sigrist added 10 points each for the Golden Eagles as well.

Oswego State will travel to Cortland Saturday to face the Red Dragons at 2 p.m. missing or outdated ad config
