Early Surge Carries Oswego State Lacrosse Over Canton

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s lacrosse team (2-0) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after the first quarter before posting a 13-2 win over SUNY Canton (0-1) on Wednesday. Freshman Cody Hoose (Syracuse, N.Y.) broke out for four goals and three assists, while eight other Lakers scored in the victory.

It took a little bit of time to get the scoring started, but Ben Morrill (Fr., Webster, N.Y.) put Oswego State on the board with 6:31 left in the first quarter after receiving a pass from Chris Porten (So., Auburn, N.Y.). Cody Hoose, Connor Khammar (Fr., Camillus, N.Y.), Porten, and Britt Leone (Sr., Schenectady, N.Y.) closed out the frame with goals to give the Lakers a 5-0 advantage.

Momentum spilled over into the first minute of the second quarter when Porten found Khammar open for his second goal of the contest. Scoring slowed down the rest of the halftime until Matt Palmer’s (Fr., Pittsford, N.Y.) marker with three seconds remaining in the half sent the Lakers into intermission with a 7-0 lead.

Hoose had a hand in both Oswego State goals in the third quarter as he assisted Porten with 12:32 on the clock, and scored following a Casey Balzer (Jr., Nassau, N.Y.) pass over three minutes later.

Junior Chad Smith (Fulton, N.Y.) extended the margin to ten goals 53 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Lakers added goals from Hoose, Dan Viviano (Jr., New Hyde Park, N.Y.), and Connor Brown (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) over the next five minutes. Brian Slattery (Fr., St. James, N.Y.) registered an assist on Brown’s goal.

SUNY Canton’s Alex Tibbles scored a pair of goals late in the fourth quarter to make the final score 13-2.

Oswego State goalie Ian O’Brien (Sr., Ganesvoort, N.Y.) recorded two saves in three quarters of action, while Jason Ketchoyian (Fr., Binghamton, N.Y.) gave up both goals in the fourth. Roo keeper Corey Spuck tallied 14 saves on 27 shots on goal.

Ron Mckay (Fr., Waterford, N.Y.) had a strong day during face-offs as he went 11-for-14, and paced the Lakers with five groundballs. Oswego State was also 18-for-19 in clear attempts.

The Lakers face Greensboro College on Wednesday, March 14 in Greensboro, N.C. at 1 p.m.
