OSWEGO, NY – The weather is cooperating and Oswego athletes are heating up for post season competition.
Ford Formidable in Track
Oswego junior Whitney Ford, turned in an outstanding performance for the Lady Bucs, at the 20 team East Syracuse-Minoa Girls’ Track and Field Invitational, held Friday afternoon at East Syracuse-Minoa High School.
Ford ran a fast personal best time of 27.60 in the 200 meter dash, to finish first overall, in a very competitive race.
She also placed third in the 100 meter dash, with a season best time of 13.25 and earned third place in the triple jump, with a fine leap of 31′ 7″.
Freshman Deondra Smith shattered her previous best performance in the Varsity Two- 200 meter dash, with a strong time of 31.08, to finish first in her heat.
McKenzie Demong and Caylin Ward also turned in personal best performances in the 200 meter dash for the Lady Bucs.
Other strong efforts for Oswego were turned in by Nikole Boncorsi and Michelle Champagne in the 800 meter dash, Alyssa Suits in the discus, Colleen Fraser in the 200 meter dash and Paige Gray and Catherine Wells in the 400 meter dash.
The Lady Bucs returned to action Wednesday, hosting the undefeated Lady Hornets of Fayetteville-Manlius, in a CNYCL league matchup, starting at 5 p.m. at the Oswego Middle School.
Softball Stings Bees
The Oswego High School varsity softball team scored multiple runs in six different innings and pounded out 20 hits en route to a 20-3 victory over Baldwinsville on Monday.
Every Lady Buccaneer starter had at least one hit and scored at least one run against B’ville ace Lizzie Campbell.
Erika Lazzaro set the tone for the day by singling sharply to centerfield on the game’s first pitch. She stole second and scored on Devynn Wilder’s RBI double. Wilder came home on an Emily Kolenda RBI single, and she, in turn, was driven in by Mary Montagnola, making it 3-0 Oswego.
The Bucs added two in the second and five in the third to put the game out of reach early.
Meanwhile, pitcher Kolenda allowed only two hits through six innings while striking out 13. She lost her shutout in the seventh as the Bees plated three runs on three hits.
Leading the 20-hit assault were Lazzaro, Wilder, Ashlee Wapen and Allie Yule with three hits each.
Kaitlin Friel and Montagnola added two hits and two RBIs apiece. Kolenda’s two hits plated four runs, and Taylor Maas and Vicki Race each singled.
The Lady Bucs are now 3-1 in the CNYCL and 7-2 overall.
According to Coach Mike McCrobie, the lopsided score is not what it appears to be. “B’ville is a very good team, with one of the league’s top pitchers. It’s not like we beat up on a weak opponent. Our kids just had one of those days where everything went right. It was a great way to begin a six-game week,” he said.
The Bucs were scheduled to play at Corcoran on Tuesday then return home Wednesday for a 6 p.m. doubleheader against FM. The first game will continue a suspended game that is tied 0-0 entering the sixth inning. A second game will follow.
Boys’ Track at South Jeff Invite
The Oswego High School varsity boys track team turned in some fine performances at the South Jefferson Invitational on Saturday, even though the team was lacking some of its top athletes.
Mike Ruggio had a good day as he placed fourth in the discus (115’) and sixth in the shot put (41’ 11”).
Dustin Searor finished sixth in the 400 meters as he ran well in that event, Coach Erwin Dewey said.
Oswego’s sprint medley relay team placed sixth with Peter Khamis leading off in the 400 meters. He was followed by Devlin Babcock and Alejandro Lara running the 200 meters and Morgan Rabalais in the 800 meters.
The Bucs’ 4 x 800-meter relay team finished sixth with the quartet of Jake Annal, Matt Bivens, Jim Dillon and Dave Johnson doing a good job.
Colin Morgan had two good races. He finished seventh in the 3,200 meters with a season-best time of 10:35.3, moving him closer to qualifying for the sectionals. He also ran well in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:53.1.
Bivens ran well in the 400 meters with a personal-best time of 58.0. Steve LiVoti continues to be consistent in the discus as he had a throw of 107’ 10”.
Oswego’s next meet is Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at home against Fayetteville-Manlius.
Golfers Continue to be Competitive
The Lady Buc Golfers finally saw some sunlight on Thursday, as they continued their 2011 season with a home match against undefeated, league-leading Auburn. After all was said and done, Oswego’s 225 strokes could not match Auburn’s 205 total, though it was one of the best scores Oswego has posted at home in two years.
Shining in the match for Oswego were Buc golfers Sarah Gosek and Meghan LiVoti.
Gosek, a junior, has been flirting with scores in the 40’s all season. On Thursday, she came to the difficult uphill par-4 ninth, needing only a par to shoot 49. She carded an eight on the hole after a few wayward shots, but her overall total of 53 was good enough to once again earn her team medalist honors.
Sarah has been team medalist in all five matches this season, and is living up to her reputation as team captain.
Meghan LiVoti had more than just a career day on Thursday at Oswego Country Club.
The freshman’s total stroke count of 55 was not only her season best; it also included two pars and one incredible birdie. After making par on holes 2 (where Meghan snaked in a 15-foot, uphill bending putt) and 4 (an uphill par-4 with a blind green), Meghan approached the 360-yard ninth hole. After two solid strikes, Meghan was left in the middle of the fairway, some 40 yards or so from the pin. The only lefty on the team this year, she took her usual stoic stance over the ball and wasted no time striking the shot.
From the sound that emanated from her clubhead, it was clear that Meghan had hit the shot purely. The small crowd that had gathered around the ninth green (including mostly coaches and players) oohed and ahhed as Meghan’s ball landed pin high and rolled some 15 feet behind the flagstick. As Meghan reached down to pick up her bag, though, she was unaware of what was transpiring on the green before her. Her ball was rolling steadily back toward the cup!
A small murmur began in the crowd and erupted into a roar when the ball gently nestled itself into the hole for an unbelievable birdie-3.
Coach Dan Rose said, “It was the first match birdie of the year for Oswego, but definitely not the last. With four matches left before sectionals, the Lady Bucs are primed for a strong finish. A solid week of practice lies between them and their next bout and, weather permitting, this leaves many chances to refine fundamentals and build team chemistry.”
The girls next compete at Hickory Hills in Baldwinsville against a strong B-Ville team Friday.
The team is now 2-7 on the season.
Corcoran Tough for Lacrosse
The Oswego High School varsity lacrosse team ran into a buzz saw against the visiting Corcoran Cougars as the Bucs fell 19-1.
Corcoran scored seven in the first quarter and seven more in the second while Oswego managed to get a lone goal from Matt Lloyd and Erik May had the assist. Trent Yule had nine saves and Buddy Wilson two for the Bucs.
Oswego moved to 8-7 on the year.

Girls’ Jayvee Lacrosse Victorious
The Oswego girls’ jayvee lacrosse team defeated Corcoran 14-9 on Friday afternoon at Corcoran.
The home standing Cougars jumped out to a quick 2 – 0 lead, but were unable to maintain it, as the Lady Bucs went on an 11-1 run and led at halftime 11-3.
Pacing the balanced Oswego attack was Hannah Fitzgerald with five goals and one assist.
Also contributing to the Oswego cause were Sydney Knight with three goals and one assist, Catie Geroux and Morgan Cook with two goals and one assist each, Hailey Ihlow one goal and two assists, Alexis Dingman one goal, and Ali Hare and Caroline Dougherty with one assist each.
Goalie Kerrigan Cummins had another outstanding game and finished with 14 saves.
The Oswego jayvee girls defeated visiting Spencerport 18-5 on Saturday afternoon.
The home standing Lady Bucs jumped out to a 9-3 halftime lead, gave up the first two goals of the second half to the visitors, and proceeded to dominate the remainder of the game.
Leading Oswego scoring was Geroux with five goals and one assist.
Also contributing to the Oswego cause were Fitzgerald with four goals, Kara Collins with three goals and one assist, Knight, Morgan cook and Dingman with two goals each, Dougherty with two assists and Brooke Broadwell and Johnna Scruton with one assist each.
Goalies Mikayla Allen with nine saves and Cummins with four paced the very stingy Buc defense.
Others contributing on defense were Emily Henderson, Alanna Maldonado, Jodi Kester, Morgan Hillman, Mallory Gordon, Taite Phillips, Madisyn Whelan, Allison Hare and Bethany Rookey.
Modified Softball Loses
The modified softball team came so close to winning, but fell 14-13 to Central Square.
Jordan McCauley pitched the first four innings and allowed nine runs while giving up four this and seven walks while striking out two.
Alexis Alfano pitched two innings and gave up five runs, two hits while walking nine and fanning three.
Contributing for the Bucs were Jordan McCauley with one hit and three runs, Maia Delaney with one hit and two runs, Emily Lagoe, Natasha Mezza, Nora Culeton, Kennedy Thompson each scoring a run, M’Kenzie Bradshaw and Alecia Ascenzi with one hit and a run each, Sydney Leroy and Hannah Gorman with a run each.
