The Fulton boys varsity bowling team is looking to improve in their second chance at a state title this Saturday at Mardi-Bob Lanes in Poughkeepsie. In last years tournament the Raiders finished in fourth place but look poised to take the top spot this year.
The Fulton bowlers are making their second straight trip to states after capturing the section III championship two years in a row. It’s a feat that Coach Mike Tryniski says is even more impressive than actually winning states.
“Even though it is the ten better teams it is still easier,†said Coach Tryniski. “In our section you have to beat 30 teams to win and that is really difficult.â€Â
The Raiders struggled early in the year trying to find their groove, and suffered their first loss in three years. But a comeback victory in the county tournament could be recognized as the turning point in the season. They had an impressive showing making a dramatic comeback to win in the team event after trailing by more than 100 pins, and also went on to take the doubles and singles.
Coach Tryniski thinks that this squad has a better chance at winning states compared to last year’s team. He believes that this is a stronger core from top to bottom this year, now that they have some momentum.
“My higher bowlers are better, last year I had one outstanding bowler this year I have two to three outstanding bowlers, so I think that really makes a difference,†said Tryniski.
This Raider team had actually posted lower scores throughout the year, but just started to come around in the past two weeks. With that new found confidence they are looking to make a strong push for a state title.
“It’s just been steam rolling for two weeks. It’s just every day it gets better and better it really has, they’re really excited I think they’re going to do well. I really like our chances.â€Â
Tryniski’s key to having a chance to win is simple. “It’s going to take a solid team effort.†It also helps that the lane pattern that will be used in states has been released so the bowlers know what to expect. Tryniski feels that this is an advantage for him as a coach.
â€ÂI’m a bowler and I can look at that and match up their balls, match up their surfaces. I can really prep them to give them the best chance to bowl well, whereas a lot of the teams don’t have bowlers for coaches.â€Â
Fulton seniors Jondn Tryniski, Sean Amico, and Derek Southworth were all on the team last year and seem well prepared to close out their season with a state title.
