Students fill the stands at home and away games, and their passion has been recognized by opposing players, fans and coaches.

The Warrior cheering section has also caught the eye of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, which hosts an annual “Battle of the Fans” video contest.

This year, Hannibal submitted an entry and landed in the Top 10 in the competition.

According to Hannibal High School technology teacher Dom Pike, who captured the video of the student cheering section during recent boys’ and girls’ basketball games, students have embraced Purple Pride this year.

“The students have been great. We have 100 or more students in the crowd every game night,” he said. “It’s helped generate a closer-knit student body.”

Pike noted that the number of student fans is remarkable considering the student population pales in comparison to the other finalists in the Battle of the Fans competition.

In addition to student participation, other judging criteria for the video included positive sportsmanship, school spirit, originality of cheers, organization, leadership and overall impression.

While this year’s video contest has concluded, the Hannibal student cheering section expects to continue its “fandamonium” well into the future.

“Our seniors are great leaders and they really have been a big part of reinvigorating Hannibal school spirit,” Pike said. “That has had a trickle-down effect, and the whole district is feeling it.”
