Herriven, Lawton Score More Than $2,000 in Fall Frenzy at Oswego Kartway

OSWEGO, NY – On Saturday afternoon Oswego Kartway held the third running of the RJ Kart Sales Fall Frenzy Championships with over 90 entries checking in through the gates and nearly 30 racers vying for more than $3,000 in prize money in the State Clone 360 and Clone Medium divisions.

Nick Herriven (28) and Hunter Lawton (61) were the big winners at Oswego Kartway's Fall Frenzy on Saturday.
Nick Herriven (28) and Hunter Lawton (61) were the big winners at Oswego Kartway’s Fall Frenzy on Saturday.

For the fourth time in Oswego Kartway history, a 100-lap event was contended on the tight and tricky Bullring with Performance Manufacturing’s Nick Herriven showing the way on his No. 28 Xpect, besting a total field of 20 entrants in the $1,000 to win spectacle for the State Clone 360 division.

Herriven started fifth in the running order, darting to the lead on lap 36 and never looked back on his way to a big pay day at the Oswego oval.

A total of 20 karts would take time in RJ Kart Sales Fall Frenzy 100 time trials with the top eight securing automatic spots to the A-Main.

Kartway regular Josh Ostrander would set fast time in the No. 41J, collecting the Performance Manufacturing $300 pole award for his efforts. Joining Ostrander as automatic entrants to the 100-lapper from time trials were Chris Pier, Chris Natoli, Tyler Thompson, Herriven, Kyle Reuter, Nick McGill, and Jamie Shutts.

The rest of the field would contend in a 15-lap B-Main, qualifying only four karts to the A.

Thomas Montgomery would start on pole position in the B, leading all 15 laps for the win over Chris Knight, Ryan Demers, and Tim Campbell – who would all qualify for the big show. Jake Sivers would earn the 13th and final qualifying spot as a Kartway provisional starter.

Shannon Pitcher would be the first kart not to qualify, and would collect $50 for his efforts.

Once in the A-main it would be Ostrander early on showing the way, with an emerging Natoli showing strength in the No. 33.

Natoli, the only previous Fall Frenzy 100 champion in the field, was looking to become the first repeat winner and made a low side move on Ostrander at lap 10 for the top spot out of turn four, but broke loose. Natoli did a great job to save the machine but would lose a spot to Pier and eventually Herriven, who would go from 5th to 3rd by lap 14.

The 20th lap would see the races first lead change as Pier found his way by Ostrander for the top spot, with Herriven following suit on lap 21.

From this point on it could be seen that Herriven was really coming alive in the No. 28, hounding Pier for the top spot for the next several circuits.

Natoli, who got shuffled back early on, was starting to rise once again in the No. 33, getting by Ostrander for 3rd on lap 22. Joining Natoli on the charge was the Shutts No. 2, who started back in the 8th position.

Shutts broke into the top five on lap 26, making his way by the Reuter No. 38 and after a lap 28 restart would slide into 4th passed Natoli. Unfortunately only two laps later the chain would fail on the Shutts machine as a result of conttact with another kart earlier in the race, dropping the No. 2 from contention on lap 32.

With all this action happening behind, Herriven completed his charge on lap 36, sliding by Pier for the top spot, immediately checking out from the rest of the field.

At the halfway point Herriven would earn $200 from D&S Landscaping, leading Pier, Ostrander, Natoli, Thompson, McGill, Montgomery, Reuter, Sivers, and Campbell in the top ten spots.

The second half of the race Herriven raced comfortably out front but it was Natoli once again trying to make a run to the runner-up spot.

On lap 63, after falling to as far as 6th in the field, Natoli was back to third by Pier and now looked in on Ostrander for second.

With just over 25 laps to go Natoli finally got back to where he had been early on, riding in second position at lap 74 after finding room by Ostrander. All Natoli needed now was a caution to try and reel in Herriven who was some 4 seconds out in front.

Unfortunately on lap 79 Natoli would be that caution as he and the lapped kart of Campbell came together out of the fourth turn, resulting in both karts being sent to the tail of the field.

On the restart with 20 laps to go Herriven led Ostrander, Pier, Thompson, McGill, Montgomery, and Natoli on the lead lap.

From that point on it continued to be all Herriven out front running away to a 3.120-second win over Pier who came on for second with Ostrander, Thompson, and Natoli completing the top five.

McGill and Montgomery finished 6th and 7th on the lead lap with Reuter, Sivers, and Campbell finishing the top ten, one lap down to the field.

Shutts, Demers, and Knight would complete the field in the pit area.

When it was all said and done, Herriven and the Performance Manufacturing/Slack Karts No. 28 would walk out of the Bullring having earned over $1,600 between the winner’s purse, Halfway Leader bonus, as well as the $100 Hard Charger Award and over $300 in earned lap money.

With the win Herriven joins Dan Kapuscinski, Ricky Prtichard, and Natoli as winners of the 100-lap Fall Frenzy at Oswego Kartway.

In a fantastic green to checkered 50-lap showdown, pole sitter Hunter Lawton took the lead back from a hard charging Tyler Thompson on lap 36 to pull away to a .855-second victory to claim the $250 top prize in the RJ Kart Sales Fall Brawl 50 for the Clone Medium division on Saturday.

Thompson, who started second, took the lead from Lawton on lap 6 and held the top spot for some 30-laps including the lap 25 halfway point which was worth a cool $100.

Lawton however proved to be king by race end, scoring the victory over Thompson, Trevor Bellinger, Robbie Bruce, Tom Perrin, Teddy Clayton, and Brandon Philips.

On top of the $250 top prize Lawton scored a free pizza from Cam’s Pizzera in Oswego for his pole position effort, as well as a $100 check from Gioia Signs. Lawton also cleared $75 in gift certificates from Performance Manufacturing.
