ITHACA, N.Y. – In its first action since Spring Break, the Oswego State baseball team (9-5, 2-1 SUNYAC) fell in both games of a non-conference doubleheader to Ithaca (13-4). The Lakers dropped a tough game in extra innings to start the day, losing 2-1 in 13 innings. Ithaca broke out the bats in the second game, cruising to a 10-3 win.
The Bombers plated the first run of game one in the bottom of the third inning, getting out to a 1-0 lead. A single to left field in the top of the fourth off the bat of Jordan Giller (Fr., Toronto, Ontario) brought home Alex Jurczynski (Sr., Schenectady, N.Y.) to even the score at 1-1. The tie carried into extra innings as part of a great pitching duel between Oswego State starter Dan Erne (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) and Ithaca starter Pat Lemmo, as each player lasted through ten innings. However, Ithaca plated the game-winning run on a walk-off single to center field in the 13th inning.
Ed Charles (Sr., Auburn, N.Y.) led the Lakers’ hitting attack with two hits for the game. Erne pitched a strong ten innings, allowing only four hits and one run while striking out six batters.
Oswego State could not keep pace with Ithaca’s bats in the second contest. The Bombers got out to the early lead once again, tallying a run out of the gate in the first inning. The Lakers took their first lead of the day in the third inning on an RBI single to right field by Michael Mascari (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) that scored Scott Buniak (Jr., Clifton Park, N.Y.) and later John Rauseo (So., Mattituck, N.Y.) following a throwing error.
Ithaca matched Oswego State with two runs in the bottom of the third and then caught fire in the fourth inning scoring six runs on Laker starter Jon Stevens (Sr., Chittenango. N.Y.) as the deficit became 9-2. Mike Stark (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning, cutting the lead to six runs. Ithaca added an unearned run in the sixth, the last of the scoring for the game to make for a 10-3 Oswego State loss.
Stark, Mascari, Kyle Liner (So., Cooperstown, N.Y.), and Andrew Lazzaro (Sr., Oswego, N.Y.) each collected a hit for the Lakers.
