OSWEGO, NY – Devyn Hutcheson scored a hat trick to lead the Lady Bucs to the Final Four while the boys’ hockey team and bowlers were successful.
Once again the bowlers were solid on the lanes.
In other sports action, Dan Ellingwood was runner up in league wrestling while Austin DeMott was solid off the diving board.
While in basketball action the Bucs drew a tough opponent in Utica Proctor.
Hockey Teams on Roll
The Oswego girls’ hockey team earned a berth in the Final Four with a 4-1 victory over Lake Placid on Sunday in the North Country.
Oswego, fifth seed, will head back north to Massena on Friday evening to face off against top seeded Chazy in a 6:15 p.m. and a win would send the Bucs to a repeat appearance in the state title game which is scheduled for Massena on Saturday.
The final round of games are set for Saturday at the Massena Arena with the consolation at 12:30 p.m. followed by the championship at 2:30 p.m.
Senior Hutcheson had an outstanding game with a hat trick.
Her first goal was assisted by Karissa Favata and Caitlin Friel while the other two were outstanding individual efforts.
Friel scored the other goal for the Bucs.
Madisyn Whalen was in net for the Bucs with 30 saves to her credit.
Meanwhile the boys’ varsity hockey team is fighting for second place in the league standings.
With just three games remaining the Bucs are currently in third place just two points behind Clinton (but Oswego has played one less game).
The first two teams in the league standings receive a first round bye while the third and fourth place teams will host first round games.
The Bucs are in position to host a Section III game.
Oswego has games remaining at Auburn, Fulton (in Oswego Friday) and at Skaneateles.
On Saturday night the Bucs hosted New Hartford and in one of the most explosive offensive games of the year the Bucs scored a 9-4 victory.
Austin Tracz had a night to remember with a hat trick and an assist while Fred Donabella continued to roll up the points with two goals and three assists for a five-point night.
Josh Sova contributed four points with two goals and two assists. Also scoring for the Bucs was Chris Pike with a pair of goals. Cody Mariano added two assists while Dan Maniccia also had two assist.
Nick Mathes and Eric Dunsmoor each had an assist.
The game was close early with Bucs leading 3-0 after one as action was continually moving end to end.
In the second the Bucs were up 7-3.
In net Tyler Kraft of New Hartford stopped 44 shots while Oswego’s Chase Izyk finished with 32 saves.
Ellingwood Runner Up in Section III AA
The Oswego High School varsity wrestling team was in action this past weekend at the Class AA Section III Tournament at Cicero-North Syracuse.
Host CNS won the event over Baldwinsville, Central Square, Rome Free and Liverpool while Oswego finished ninth with 34 points.
Dan Ellingwood, at 171, started the day with a 9-3 decision over Ryan VanPatten of Jamesville-DeWitt and then scored a 2-1 win over Matt Nichols before entering the final against Dan Secor of Rome Free.
Ellingwood lost a major decision 12-1 to finish in second place.
Mike Ruggio, at 160, was on the mat for four matches. He started with a pin of Paul D’Antonio of Jamesville-DeWitt in 3:45, but then lost to the eventual champion Mende Cukaleviski of Liverpool in 3:31. Ruggio came back with a pin of Evan Stefano of West Genesee in 3:10 and finished third with a thrilling 14-13 win over Andrew Osborne of CNS.
Bowlers Paced by Clemons & Hoefer
Matt Clemons finished with a 638 series and Christie Hoefer a 634 as they paced the boys’ and girls’ bowling teams in the latest match with Cicero-North Syracuse.
In boys’ action Oswego started with a 1,075-910 win and won the second 905-886. However, CNS came back to win the finale 931-915.
The girls’ lost the first game 741-698, but won the second 770-758; the final game was tied at 761.
Behind Clemons Dan Cliff was the only other Buc rolling all three games and he had a 561.
Two game totals included Joey Clavelli 394, Kevin Goodale 391 and Dan Cliff 289.
Single games were rolled by Cameron Byrne 216, Zack DelBrocco 204 and Gavin Gilbert 202.
In girls’ action following Hoefer were Ashlee Lytle 477, Paige Blum 450, Allison Martin 266 (two games), Brittney Noyes 221 (two games) and Courtney Bartlett 181 (two games).
State Ranked UP Defeats Bucs
Utica Proctor rolled into Oswego on Friday night seeking its 12th straight win and walked out of Powers Gym with a 57-38 victory.
Proctor came to Oswego ranked 15th in the state with an 11-1 record and was led by Walkery Mills 14 points.
The Bucs kept it close early and trailed 20-15 after eighth minutes, but Proctor doubled up the home team in the second quarter outscoring the opposition 14-7 for a 37-22 halftime lead and never looked back.
Scoring for Oswego were Jake Metcalf with 12 and Ryan Patrick with 11. Michael Thompson netted seven, Josh Gillard six, and Justin Peterson two.
Oswego fell to 4-9 on the year in the non-league match.
Girls’ Basketball Upended
Oswego had the long road trip to Utica Proctor on Friday night to face a very stern test.
State ranked Proctor was led by University of Pittsburgh bound Brianna Kiesel with 16 points en route to a 50-19 win over the Bucs to move to 13-2 on the season.
The home team raced out to a commanding 14-2 lead after eight minutes and by halftime it was 28-9.
Courtney Louis scored six for Oswego while Marisa Dashner and Taylor Giglio had four each.
Emily Barlow and Kelsey Ross each had two points for the 6-9 Bucs.
Diver In CNYCL Championship
Austin DeMott of Oswego competed in the boys’ diving action in the CNYCL Championship Meet at Nottingham.
DeMott scored 256.957 to finish eighth in the highly competitive event.
Jayvee Girls Fall
The Oswego Buc jayvee girls’ basketball team struggled with shooting against Utica Proctor and lost a 55-28 decision.
Coach Jessica Tremblay said, “We missed easy layup and second chance shots and it really came back to hurt us.”
Proctor came out fast scoring 19 and giving up just nine in the first quarter. The Bucs made a small run cutting the deficit to eight points in the second quarter, but it just was not enough.
After the half Oswego could not make a comeback and Proctor took the win.
Leading scorers from Proctor were: Ballard with 20 and Pett with 11.
Scoring leaders for the Bucs were Marguerite Dillon with eight and Katie Knopp with seven.
