OSWEGO, NY – The Lady Bucs capped an impressive season on Saturday at the Section 3 State Qualifier Championship swimming and diving meet at Nottingham High School.
Eight out of the fourteen Oswego Sectional Meet qualifiers were invited back to the elite meet as one the top 24 in the section in their respective events.
Coming off of an impressive Class A Championship meet on Thursday, the Lady Bucs were ready for more.
Again, seniors Mara Parker, Haley Annal, and Michaela Auer provided some great leadership at the intimidating meet for the predominantly younger Oswego team.
Auer finaled in the 50 free and 100 breast, placing fourth in the 50 free with a NY State Championship Meet qualifying time of 25.18, and placed third in the breaststroke with a new school record and New York State Meet qualifying time of 1:08.55 beating her own record of 1:10.40 established two years ago.
Parker finaled in both the 50 free (25.79) and 100 free (56.47).
Annal came back in the 100 fly (1:05.12) and the 100 back (1:08.30), swimming personal best times in both.
Coach Josh Lerch said, “Individually, I am very proud of all my seniors and their performances over these past few days. However, their contributions to our relays, enabling all of our relays to drop at least a second since qualifying for the meet on Thursday, helped our team to a very respectable 6th place finish at the meet in a field of over 35 teams.”
Junior Kaila McClelland and sophomore Chrissy Abare were also big contributors.
Kaila placed in the top 12 in both the 500 free (5:43.96) and the 200 I.M. in a personal best time of 2:26.74, in addition to swimming her best 50 backstroke split (31.92) to lead off our medley relay.
Chrissy Abare, our lone sophomore, also played a big part in our success.
Chrissy made it back in the 200 free (2:07.22) and the 100 free, swimming a personal best in the event (58.29).
She also was integral in the success of both our 200 and 400 free relays, swimming lifetime best splits in both events (26.47 seconds in the 50 and 58.00 seconds in the 100).
Freshman Carrie Gilbert and Colleen Fraser and eighth grader Mayra Lopez completed the impressive roster for the Lady Bucs at the championship meet.
Gilbert again swam an outstanding split of 27.37 seconds to anchor the medley relay.
Fraser competed in the 100 breaststroke after swimming an outstanding qualifying time of 1:16.45 at the Class A Championship Meet on Thursday.
Lopez made it back in both the 200 free and the 500 free, placing an impressive 14th in the 500.
However, Mayra’s performance on the 200 and 400 free relays was probably even more impressive than her individual swims.
She swam personal bests on both going 26.9 in her 50 and 59.79 in her 100.
Coach Lerch said, “This was a great ending to another strong season for the Lady Bucs. While Michaela Auer will be preparing for the New York State Championship Meet coming up in two weeks in hopes of lowering her school record yet again, the rest of the team will be able to sit back and look favorably on their first, or possibly their last, but most assuredly their best, season.”
Lady Buc swimmers excelled in the pool while the boys’ volleyball team fell in Section III competition. This was also the week that the Buc Boosters recognized fall sports athletes.
Robinson Leads Lady Bucs
The Oswego girls’ cross country team closed out a successful season Saturday with an outstanding performance at the Section 3 Cross Country Championships.
Junior standout Mackenzie Robinson, ran a fine time of 21:13.4, over the wet and muddy Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School course, to finish 25th overall, in a field that included some of the top runners in the section and state.
Her time lowered her previous course best by 1:27.
Senior Michelle Champagne, turned in her best race of the season (24:48.6), to finish second for the Lady Bucs.
Rapidly improving freshman Meghan LiVoti shattered her previous course best by close to five minutes to finish with a personal best time of 25:06.6 over the very challenging five kilometer course.
Sophomore Kaela Shafer also ran a best for Oswego, with an improvement of over one minute, on the VVS layout, which will be the site for the 2011 New York State Cross Country Championships.
