OSWEGO, NY – Lacrosse, tennis, baseball and track and field were all in action recently for the Oswego High School athletic program.
Lady Bucs Champions
Oswego High School varsity girls’ lacrosse coach Laura Burger probably wishes for more weeks like last one.
The Lady Bucs started the year 0-5, but rolled off four straight victories including capturing the Oswego County championship tournament over Fulton.
Oswego captured the “War on the Shores” which involved all four Oswego County scholastic girls’ varsity lacrosse teams.
In the title game the Bucs won 16-7 to earn the championship.
Coach Burger said, “We began the game with intensity taking a 7-0 lead and maintained the advantage for the remainder of the game.”
Taylor Giglio had four goals and three assists while Mikayla Place scored three and added three assists.
Becca Martin, Sam McCarrick and Kaitlin Armstrong had two each. While Danielle Faivus, Erica Atkins and Lacey Brown also scored.
In net, Hayley Lukaczuk had a save while Tayler Bowman had four.
The first game of the tournament saw the Bucs defeat Central Square 14-13 while Fulton upended Mexico.
Coach Burger said, “It was a goal-for-goal battle early in the game against Square. We exchanged goals for the first ten minutes. Both teams capitalized on the others mistakes. We held at 9-5 lead at halftime and our goalie Hayley Lukaczyk had six saves in the first half.”
The second half was an upward climb for the Bucs.
Coach Burger said, “We reached our peak within the last seconds of the game. Alexa Healy scored the game winning goal with an assist from Sam McCarrick within the closing seconds of the game.”
Giglio had a four goal and one assist day while Martin had three goals while other multiple scorers included McCarrick, Armstrong and Place with two each. Healey also scored for the Bucs.
Place had two assists, Giglio, Martin and McCarrick each assisted.
In net, Bowman and Lukaczyk each had six saves.
The Oswego County Tournament “War on the Shore” finished up on Saturday afternoon with the Bucs defeating Fulton.
Boys Continue Battle
Weather took away any home field advantage for the Oswego varsity boys’ lacrosse team as the contest against Henninger was shifted to the turf field at the Syracuse school.
The teams got involved in a tight, tough game as the Bucs lost 11-10.
Henninger jumped out to a 6-3 lead, but by halftime the Bucs had trimmed it to 9-7. In the third quarter the Knights scored twice and the teams entered the final period with the Bucs trailing 11-9. However, Oswego scored twice to cut the deficit.
For the Bucs Trent Yule stopped 14 shots and Buddy Wilson had two.
Dom Cianfarano had six goals while John Kaplewicz, Cody Mariano, David Mathes and Jeremy Purce had one goal each.
Assists were chalked up by Kyle Clark and Dan Maniccia each had two goals while Colin Joyce and Matt Lloyd had one each.
Coach Doc Nelson said, “Dom Cianfarano scored six goals and was almost solely responsible for keeping us in the game. His last was the most spectacular, a short handed goal with two of our guys in the penalty box and being tripled team.”
Oswego moved to 6-4 on the year.
On Saturday the Bucs tangled with General Brown and came home with a 12-9 victory.
Coach Nelson said, “It was another painfully sluggish start, but we started moving better with and without the ball in the fourth quarter. We had trouble penetrating their zone defense in the first half, but they didn’t solve our zone either. We had good scoring balance and our midfield defense did a nice job late in the game knocking down passes and creating some transition offense.”
The Bucs held a 3-1 lead after one, but then General Brown took the lead 4-3 at halftime.
The teams each scored three in the third, but in the final quarter the Bucs outscored the opposition 6-2.
Kaplewicz has three goals while Cianfarano, Lloyd and Mariano each had two.
Mathes, Maniccia and Clark each scored for the Bucs.
Assists came from Cianfarano and Clark with two each, while adding one apiece were John Phillips, Jeremy Purce, Lloyd and Maniccia.
Trent Yule finished with four saves as the Bucs went to 7-4.
Keefe Solid in Track
Oswego lost to Nottingham 74-64 in track and field action.
Coach Erwin Dewey said, “The team performed well as it won nine of 17 events, but lack of depth in some hurt us.”
Corey Keefe had another solid day with four wins. He won the 100 in 11.2, the 200 in 23.7, and the 110 hurdles in 15.4 He also was first in the high jump at 5’8” in only his second time in the event.
Colin Morgan won three events with victories in the 1600 (5:03.1), 800 (2:16.1) and 3200 (11:13).
Dustin Searor did well in winning the long jump with a leap of just over 17’2” and was second in the 400 hurdles (65.1) and the 400 (56.4).
Alejandro Lara won the pole vault and was second in the 800 while Mike Ruggio was second in the shot (4’11”) and third in the discus (89’11”).
Steve LiVoti had his best day with second in the discuss (100’1”) while third place finishers were Mitch Rabalais in the 3200 and 1600 along with Peter Khamis in the 800.
Buc Bats Quieted
Oswego had just one hit as the fans saw a good pitching battle between Baldwinsville lefty Pay Merryweather and Oswego ace Matt Pirro.
The Bucs gave up a run in the first and another in the top of the seventh to lose 2-0.
Pirro gave up a run on five hits, walked three and fanned a dozen while Merryweather gave up just one hit, to Pirro in the fifth inning.
The winning pitcher walked no one and fanned nine.
Jayvee Girls Win Second
Oswego jayvee girls’ lacrosse team won its second game of the year with a 10-6 win over Henninger.
The Bucs jumped to a quick 4-1 lead and never trailed, maintaining their margin for the remainder of the game.
Leading the Oswego attack were Catie Geroux with four goals and two assists while Morgan Cook added two goals and four assists. Hannah Fitzgerald had two goals and an assist. Brianna Favata had a goal and assist and Sydney Knight also scored a goal.
Also contributing to the Oswego offense were Liz Babcock, Bethany Rookey and Johnna Scruton.
Coach Don Fronk said, “The entire defense did an outstanding job, led by goalie Kerrigan Cummins. Others contribution to the aggressive Buc defense were defenders Brooke Broadwell, Emily Henderson, Madisyn Whelan, Ashley Sharkey, Hailey Ihlow, Alexis Dingman and Allison Hare.”
Oswego jayvee girls also defeated Auburn 12-8 in winning the first game of the year.
The Bucs jumped to a 10-1 halftime lead with strong defense and a very good transition game.
Knight had three goals while Fitzgerald and Cook had two each.
Caroline Dougherty, Allison Hare, Geroux, Broadwell and Favata each scored while Catherine Clancy and Alexis Dingman each had an assist.
