OSWEGO, NY – Mariah Madrigal of the Oswego State women’s ice hockey team was named the inaugural Goalie of the Year by the Northeast Women’s Hockey League.
The goaltender has helped Oswego to a 12-12-2 record in its first year as part of the NEWHL; with an upcoming appearance in the title game of the NEWHL Championship.
Appearing in 19 games for the Lakers, Madrigal holds a winning record of 9-7-2 this season.
The senior’s nine wins puts her in a tie for second place in the conference.
In her 19 games, Madrigal sports a save percentage of .916 and a goals-against average of just 1.96.
The Brownstown, Mich., native has finished every season of her career with a goals-against average below 2.00.
Her career goals-against average of 1.86 earns her second place in the modern era of program history.
Madrigal’s season is highlighted by her four shutout victories, earning her a tie for the 14th spot in the nation.
Blanking Cortland on the road in a 4-0 win on Feb. 9 and following up with a 4-1 victory the next day, Madrigal earned the title of NEWHL Goalie of the Week and Oswego State Athlete of the Week.
The goalie’s most recent shutout came in the Lakers’ 5-0 upset of second-seeded Buffalo State on the road on Saturday.
Making 24 saves, Madrigal helped Oswego advance to the final round of the inaugural NEWHL Championship.
Madrigal and the Lakers will compete in the final round at 3 p.m. on Saturday, as Oswego faces the top-seeded Plattsburgh Cardinals.
