Laker Volleyball Splits Action Saturday

CANTON, N.Y. – The Oswego State volleyball team (8-9) opened the day by defeating Morrisville (2-8), 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-23) before losing to SUNY Canton (13-2), 3-0, (25-21, 25-11, 25-12), on Saturday.

The first Laker match started out as a tight affair, as both teams exchanged points until Stephany Olsheski (Sr., Brockport, N.Y.) triggered a 9-0 Oswego State run fueled by two service aces and three of Sabrina Sutton’s (Jr., Fulton, N.Y.) five kills. By the end of the rotation, the Lakers held an insurmountable 19-11 lead. Head coach J.J. O’Connell’s squad closed out the set on a Mustang hitting error.

Morrisville opened the second set with a 5-2 advantage, but Emily Walser (Fr., Baldwinsville, N.Y.) rattled off nine straight points during her serve to put Oswego State ahead 11-5. The Mustangs went on a scoring run of their own to level the set at 12-all behind the strength of three Dayna Scurry kills. With the score tied at 15, the Lakers put together another back breaking run after three Chelsea Crump (Sr., Sandy Creek, N.Y.) kills and an Olsheski service ace to make the score 21-15. Morrisville recorded the next three points, but Oswego State won the next four points for the set victory.

The final set played out in a similar fashion, but the Mustangs clung to a two-point lead at 17-15 following a Kylie Murphy kill. However, that advantage did not last long as Oswego State embarked on a 9-3 stretch that saw five different Lakers register kills to go ahead 24-20. Morrisville saved the next three match points, but a well-placed Morgan Grimes (Sr., Cambridge, N.Y.) tip ended the match.

In a match that saw a different lineup in every set, Morgan Lavner (Jr., Oswego, N.Y.) finished with a team-high eight kills to go along with seven digs. Olsheski fell one dig short of a double-double as she registered 19 assists and nine digs, while also posting three service aces. In addition to her five kills, Sutton ended with four of Oswego State’s 12 aces.

The Lakers struggled to get into their offense in against host SUNY Canton, as the team finished with 14 kills compared to 22 hitting errors. Meaghan Puff (Jr., Newfane, N.Y.) and Stephanie Bailey (So., Scotia, N.Y.) combined for eight of the 14 kills. Sutton ended with 11 digs, while Brittany Jones (Sr., Lake George, N.Y.) tallied eight assists. Morgan Bills paced the Roos with 14 kills, while Danielle Swanston added 12 digs.
