OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego High School Lady Bucs varsity volleyball team advanced to the Section III Class A Tournament semifinal round with a 3-1 win over Liverpool at Powers Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
The Bucs, seeded fourth in post season play, faced off against the number five Liverpool Warriors.
Oswego got off to a dominating start with a convincing 25-13 first game win in a set that was highlighted by strong net play, solid defense, good ball movement and strong serves.
In the second set the Bucs trailed at one point 9-3, but stormed back. After tying it up the Bucs simply ran away with a 25-16 verdict.
The cohesiveness of the first two games disappeared in the third as the Bucs appeared to be out of sync against the Warriors. Liverpool playing like a team that had nothing to lose appeared very loose and simply had momentum throughout the match. The Bucs fell 25-15.
The game that clinched the next round of play for the Lady Bucs was the fourth, but the decision didn’t come easily. Once again the Bucs fell behind and were forced to battle back. It was a long distance rally, but eventually the Bucs did what they had to do in the late going to pull off a 26-24 victory.
For the Bucs Alexa Healy had two aces, 36 assists and one block while Kelsey Ross had nine kills, an ace and a dozen digs. Mary Montagnola finished with 13 digs while Cydney Ward finished with 13 kills, four blocks, and two digs.
Bella Winklestine had a solid game with five kills, an ace and two digs. Also contributing were Erica Atkins with a kill and two digs; Cat Clancy with three aces and four digs, Carlie Morley with three kills, an assist and dig; Connie Purce with eight kills and four digs and Sarah Stoebner with two aces and five digs.
Oswego moved its record to 13-3 overall as the CNYCL American Division champion moves on to the semis against number one seed Baldwinsville.
