OSWEGO, NY – Once again the Oswego golf team gained a win while the cross country team had some solid individual performances and other teams were also in action recently.
Oswego Golfers Victorious At Home
The Oswego High School golf team topped two rivals on Wednesday, beating Rome and Utica Proctor at home with a season low home team total of 198 strokes.
The wins were Oswego’s eighth and ninth of 2010, bringing their overall season record to 9-3. Rome’s total stroke count was 217 while Utica Proctor totaled 266 on the front nine at Oswego Country Club.
Medaling for the Bucs were varsity veterans Matt Lloyd and Brandon Tracz, whose steady play all year have been the key to much of the success.
Coach Dan Rose said, “In his senior year, it seems Captain Matt Lloyd has saved his best for last, accumulating the lowest overall stroke average on the team while also leading in overall putting statistics. His score of 39 on Wednesday marked the sixth time this season he has carded a number under 40.â€
Brandon Tracz is also no stranger to sub-40 scores. In this his second season as a varsity golfer, Tracz has carded three rounds in the 30s, including the team’s lowest round at home this year – a 37 during the first match of the season. He is known for his booming tee shots and deft touch around the greens.
The shot of this match went to Buc Colin Joyce, whose perfectly struck seven iron on the par three fourth hole left him just inches from the cup.
“My dad will never believe this when I tell him,†Joyce said when he saw how close his ball had come to an improbable hole in one.
After tapping in for birdie, Joyce went on to finish with a round of 39 – helping his team to the two much needed victories.
Also scoring in this match were fellow Bucs Alec Kunzwiler (40) and Sam Lalonde (41).
The Bucs are now 4-2 in league play.
Cross Country In Action
Junior cross country standout Mackenzie Robinson, turned in an outstanding personal best time of 15:35, over the fast Oswego Middle School course, to place a close second to Corcoran-Fowler’s talented junior Treshel Terpening (15:39).
Terpening, finished sixth at last year’s Section 3 Class A Cross Country Championships for Fowler High School, and advanced to the New York State Cross Country Championships at SUNY Plattsburgh.
“Mackenzie turned in a terrific race and battled Treshel from the start to the finish” said Oswego co-coach Jim McCaul. “Her fast time of 15:35, was 47 seconds faster than her time two weeks ago on the same course. Mackenzie’s dedication and strong work ethic, has really given her the experience and confidence to run with the leaders.”
The visiting Corcoran-Fowler Lady Cougars won the CNYCL league contest 15-50, Oswego’s last home contest of the season.
Junior Mikayla Place ran strong to finish second for the Lady Bucs (18:19), followed by rapidly improving freshmen Meghan LiVoti, who dropped her previous course best by 53 seconds.
Junior Kaela Schafer, ran very well throughout her race, to finish fourth for the Lady Bucs.
Oswego returned to action on Saturday, traveling to Genesee Valley Park in Rochester, for the 42nd Annual McQuaid Cross Country Invitational, one of the largest cross country invitationals in the country.
Oswego lost in boys varsity action to Corcoran-Fowler 18-44.
Colin Morgan ran to a third place finish as he ran on the OHS home cross country course for the last time. Mitch Rabalais (eighth) was just one minute behind the lead Buc runner.
Then Oswego took the next eight spots finishing 12th-19th. In order were: Jon Mahan (12th), Austin DeMott (13th), Jake Annal (14th), Jimmy Dillon (15th), Matt DiFabio (16th), Andy DiVita (17th), Alex Shannon (18th) and Steve LiVoti (19th).
Bill Crist ran a fast first mile split and ran to a very good finish of 21st.
There were three other seniors who along with Captain Colin Morgan ran for the last time on the home course: Andy DiVita, Captain Steve LiVoti and Jonathan Mahan.
The four seniors were honored after the meet for their dedicated loyalty to the OHS cross country program.
Dan Greene noted, “The times on the home course were faster today than just two weeks ago. The boys are continuing to improve as they raced well despite running a hill workout on Monday.â€
Jayvee Boys Win
The Oswego jayvee volleyball team lost the first game 19-25, but came back for 25-22 and 25-23 victory.
Oswego players began to step up and take leadership roles on the court, including Tyler Sheffield and Aaron Baxter.
The intensity they brought in the second and third game gave the teammates a boost, and passing, setting and hitting by Oswego set Liverpool back on their heels for a 3-2 record.
Modified Swimmers In Action
The girls modified swim team dropped its home opener to Liverpool at Oswego High School.
Mariah Metcalf won the 200 Free and 50 Breast. Allison Smith swam a personal best in the 200 Free and 100 Free. The 200 Medley Relay team of Zoe Ferris, Elaina Rando, Mariah Metcalf and Ayla Busch placed second with a season best time.
Strong efforts were turned in by Zoe Ferris, Kayla Becksted, Elaina Rando, Madolyn Engle, Ayla Busch, Sydney LeRoy, Ashley Sgro, Clare Donovan and Alecia Ascenzi.
