OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego High School sports teams have been active and successful of late.
Oswego bowlers downed West Genesee while the boys’ hockey team put Liverpool on ice and the wrestlers captured a win over Pulaski, while the jayvee boys’ basketball team put an ‘L†on FM for the first time in league action this year.
Bowling Team Rolls Along
Oswego and West Genesee squared off on the lanes with Oswego boys taking all three points.
Oswego won 1,115-892, 1,178-944 and 1,030-842 to improve to 26-7 overall and 12-3 in division.
Senior Jamie Cliff led the way with his highest series of the season with a 761 (268). Matt Clemons had a 693 (254) followed by Matt Salvador 691 (268), Zach Sizemore 651 (247) and Cameron Byrne 527 (191).
The girls lost all three points to West Genesee, but Coach Bob Hoefer noted, “The team recorded its third highest pin fall total of the season with a 2,011.”
Oswego lost 839-729, 818-669 and 878-613.
Junior Paige Blum had a personal best 225 game en route to a 462 series while Ashlee Lytle had a 453 and Christie Hoefer a 415. Rounding out the scoring were Ceara Donahue 361 and Chelsea Geroux 320.
The girls moved to 5-10 in division and 5-28 overall.
The Oswego boys’ varsity hockey team moved to 7-3-1 and 4-2-1 in league with a big win on Tuesday night at the New York State Fairgrounds Coliseum
The Bucs are in third place in the league standings as the Bucs sported a 5-1 win over the Liverpool Warriors.
Oswego clinched the victory in the very first period with a 2-0 lead and then improved to a 3-0 lead with two periods into the record books.
For the Bucs the offensive power was supplied by Josh Sova and Rick Uribe with two goals apiece while Fred Donabella added the other goal.
Mike Brown finished with two assists while Matt Donovan, Sam Czarnecki, Dustin Kavanaugh and Trent Yule each had assists.
Between the pipes Matt Howard finished the night with a solid 36 saves.
At the other end of the ice Mike Sportelli had 36 saves, but surrendered five goals to the Bucs.
Oswego returns to action on Thursday evening at the Crisafulli Rink against Ithaca.
Wrestling Team Gains Victory
The Oswego High School wrestling team pinned Pulaski 42-13 in a non-league outing.
At 112 Brian Pulver won by forfeit while Alex Smith earned a six point forfeit win at 125.
Kyle Rossi, at 135, pinned Jordan Allen of Pulaski in 1:20 while at 145 Adam Doviak pinned Zach Cole in 2:27. Dan Ellingwood, at 152, continued the pin parade with a win over Andrew Nicholson in 1:19. Mike Ruggio, at 160, then pinned Dillon Dice in 2:24 and Shane Bartrum pinned James Gleason at 189 in 40 seconds.
At 103 Buc Matt DiFabio lost to Travis Purdy via a pin in 56 seconds while at 130 Buc Austin Gilbert lost 9-4 to Suede Roody.
Tyler Petri of Pulaski pinned Colton Dryden in 3:59 at 140. While heavyweight Taylor Scranton won via a forfeit.
Lady Buc Cagers Fall
Fayetteville-Manlius has been a season long nemesis for the Lady Bucs varsity basketball team and on Tuesday night the Bucs lost for the fourth time this season to the Hornets by a 40-28 count.
It was a close game after one quarter with Oswego trailing 10-7, but in the second the lead went to six at 18-12. The teams scored six apiece in the third, but the home team held a 16-10 advantage in the last eight minutes for the win.
FM moved to 5-1 in league lay and 9-1 overall while the Bucs fell to 2-2 in league and 5-5 overall.
For Oswego Michelle Canale scored seven while Katie Abramski had six, Michaela Auer five, Courtney Louis three, Lindsay Johnson, Brooke Reifinger, and Marissa Canale two each and Amber Earl with one. Pacing FM were Emily Trapani with 19 and Ali Pliszka with 15.
Buc Varsity Five Caged
Oswego and FM got locked up in a solid first quarter tussle with the invading Hornets leading 17-14 after eight minutes.
However, FM proved to be too much for the Bucs to handle as the team went on a 21-6 tear in the second quarter for a half time advantage of 39-20.
The offense was on the run in the third as FM held a 28-9 advantage.
In the end, the Bucs were paced by Mac Porter with 11 points while Dan Montagnola and Joe Brown had six each. Anthony Samson scored five while Corey Galletta netted three, Troy Norton two and Ryan Patrick two points. Jack Giles had 20 and Brian Zapisek had 19 to pace FM.
Jayvee Five Hands First League Loss To FM
The Oswego jayvee boys’ basketball team defeated visiting Fayetteville Manlius 52 – 47 on Tuesday night in Powers Gym.
The loss was the first of the season in league play for the Hornets.
The inspired leadership and all around outstanding play of sophomore captains Mike Thompson and Justin Peterson again led the Bucs.
Freshman sharpshooter Josh Gillard scorched the nets with six three pointers, and 22 total points to lead the Bucs in scoring.
Fellow frosh big man Connor Riley added 14 points, and helped Oswego dominate the inside with several blocks and rebounds.
Also scoring for Oswego were Nate Miller with seven, Eric Wallace four, Thompson three, and Peterson two.
Oswego’s ability to force turnovers and limit the Hornets to only one shot on most possessions, were key factors in the win.
Riley, Peterson, Wallace and Autie Ascenzi all did an outstanding job of rebounding and playing tough inside defense.
The Bucs’ record is now 6-3, and host Nottingham on Thursday, Jan. 14 at Powers Gym.
