OSWEGO, NY – Record-setting performances have become the norm for Oswego swimmer Drake Becksted, while the girls’ varsity basketball team continues its winning ways.
The wrestlers have had several outstanding individual efforts and the jayvee and eighth grade girls’ basketball teams have been successful.
Swimmers Tough In Pool
The Oswego boys’ swimming and diving team performed well and had numerous personal best performances, but was still not able to beat the Liverpool swim team.
For the second consecutive week, Drake Becksted broke pool records.
Drake’s 21.50 in the 50 freestyle broke a Liverpool home pool record.
Coach Rick Klein said that Drake’s dolphin kick off the start and wall has improved and is giving him the extra speed he has been looking for.
The 200 Medley Relay team of Luke Familo, Zach Gerber, Zac Handley and Drake Becksted were touched out in the event, but took a second for the Bucs.
Swimming for the Bucs in the 200 freestyle were Reeve Callen (1:54.83), Josh Saternow (2:11.96) and Jim Dillon (2:14.25). The trio of Zac Handley (2:32.48), Geoff Taylor (2:34.68) and Billy McSweeney (2.59.50) placed third, fourth, and fifth, respectively in the event.
Drake Becksted swam away from his competition with a 21.50 in the 50 Freestyle and set a new pool record in the event.
Also competing in the 50 Free for the Bucs were Josh Saternow (27.20), Alex Shannon (29.12), Josh Costo (28.46), Mike Kelly (29.62), Joe Corradino (33.23) and Brian Abbott (34.21).
Brian Semione’s 204 points in diving won the event for the Bucs while Mason Rabalais placed fourth in the event.
In the 100 Butterfly Zack Gerber’s 1:05.08 and Zac Handley’s 1:06.05 had a great race of their own and placed third and fourth in the event.
In the 100 freestyle the trio of Drake Becksted (48.16), Luke Familo (56.29) and Jeremy Galvin (1:02.42) took some important points for the team and kept them close to Liverpool.
Also swimming for the Bucs in the 100 Free were Mike Kelly (1:04.86), Josh Costo (1:05.93), Joe Corradino (1:18.23) and Brian Abbott (1:23.62).
The Bucs picked up some points on Liverpool in the 500 Freestyle. Reeve Callen (5:09.33), Jim Dillon (5:54.59) and Alex Shannon (6:44.75) brought the team to within eight points of Liverpool.
The 200 Medley Relay team of Drake Becksted, Zach Gerber, Zac Handley and Reeve Callen left Liverpool in their wake and won the event with their best time of the year.
With three events to go Luke Familo (1:03.62), Jeremy Galvin (1:10.42) took second and fourth and kept the Bucs close to Liverpool.
In the last individual event of the meet the breaststroke, Zach Gerber (1:13.51), Geoff Taylor (1:16.04) and Billy McSweeney (1:25.60) brought the Bucs to within five points of Liverpool.
In the final event of the meet the 400 Freestyle the Bucs swam very well, but was not able to catch up with Liverpool.
Coach Klein was very pleased with the performance with the team. He said, “We have been practicing hard and I am sure that it is rewarding for the team to see improvements in their times.â€Â
The final meet of the regular season, Senior Night, will be on Wednesday (Feb. 3).
Following that meet the Bucs are looking forward to the Sectional and State meets.
Lady Cagers Gain Win
The Oswego Lady Bucs varsity basketball team gained its ninth win of the season with a 50-33 win over visiting Utica Proctor last Friday night.
Oswego stormed out of the gate with a 17-8 first quarter lead and added another 17 in the second for a halftime lead of 34-17.
Final stats show Katie Abramski with 14 points, Lindsay Johnson with 10, Amber Earl and Michelle Canale seven each, Brooke Reifinger five points, Michaela Auer with four and Alexis Gillard three points.
Proctor Upends Oswego Five
Oswego boys’ varsity basketball players squared off with Utica Proctor recently, but came home with a 69-45 loss.
The home team jumped out to a quick start and by half time had built a 35-24 advantage which was too much for the Bucs to overcome.
Mac Porter paced the Bucs with 14 points while Corey Galletta had a dozen, Jake Metcalf seven, Anthony Samson five, Joe Brown four and Ryan Patrick three.
Wrestlers Active At Iroquois Duals
Shane Bartrum and Dan Ellingwood made the all-tournament team at the Iroquois Duals as they went unbeaten for the day.
Bartrum earned his 99th win of his career and will be seeking his 100th during the Class AA Tournament this coming Saturday at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
Coach Kurt D’Angelo said, “We wrestled pretty well against some of the top ranked teams in the state.â€Â
Oswego lost to Newark 38-36. Bartrum pinned Milliman in 1:30 while Mike Ruggio, at 160, won via a pin over Currington in 1:36. Ellingwood gained a :51 second pin of Barnes. Austin Gilbert and Matt DiFabio won by forfeits.
The Bucs then lost to Fulton 60-18 as Kyle Rossi decisioned Howard 7-5 and Ellingwood defeated Earle 3-1. Tom Ruggio, and Bartrum won by forfeit.
The Bucs then lost to Section VI Lancaster 59-23. Ellingwood chalked up a major decision by a 13-3 count over Kuciel while Mike Ruggio won a 4-3 overtime verdict against Olewniczak and Bartrum gained a major 14-4 decision over Gerber. Nate Kulp, at 215, won by forfeit. Rossi also won with a 1:26 pin of Wojnowski.
The Bucs then felt o Iroquois 61-10 as Bartrum beat Offhouse 6-1, Ellingwood won 10-0 over Dolegowgki. Adam Doviak won via a decision over Hamman 3-2.
Jayvee Five Wins Again
The Oswego jayvee girls’ basketball team scored a 39-25 win over Utica Proctor in the last game.
Oswego moved to 8-6 on the season. It was a team effort to gain the victory and leading the scoring were Kelsey Ross with 10, Taylor Giglio with nine and Emily Kolenda with eight points.
Eighth Graders Win
The Oswego girls’ eighth grade team won 52-39 over North Syracuse to go to 3-0 on the year.
Maddy Muckey paced the way with 15 points while Erica Adkins had 10 points, Kerrigan Cummins seven, Micky Allen along with Bella Winklestine, Caitlyn McRae and Kennedy Singletary had four points each. Hannah Fitzgerald had three and Sydney Knight one.
Playing solid defense and adding to the win were Allison Bathelor, Morgan Cook, Allison Hare, Molly Malone, and Emily Mills.
