OSWEGO, NY – Post season action is set for several Oswego High School teams and athletes while other squads finish up the regular season.
On Friday night the Lady Bucs hockey team competes in the semifinal round of the girls’ hockey state frozen four at Skaneateles.
The Bucs will meet host Skaneateles at 5 p.m. on Friday with the nightcap sending Chazy against Alexandria Bay.
The championship game is slated for Skaneateles at 2 p.m. on Saturday with the third place contest at noon.
Meanwhile, Oswego swimmers, wrestlers and bowlers will be vying in post season action in hopes of advancing to the state action.
In action on Tuesday night the Bucs boys’ and girls’ varsity fives fell to Corcoran while the boys’ hockey team was surprised by Liverpool.
Lady Bucs Fall To Ranked Corcoran
Corcoran is ranked among the best in New York State and showed that they were the real thing as the Cougars defeated Oswego 57-42.
The home team, led by Carrie Blunt’s 16 and Ayana Bradley’s 14, held a 28-20 halftime lead, but wore the Bucs down and gained a bigger advantage in the third quarter.
For Oswego Brooke Reifinger had 10 points followed by Katie Abramski with nine, Lindsay Johnson nine, Amber Earl seven, Michaela Auer five and Michele Canale with two.
Buc Boys Fall To Cougars
Oswego stayed close early, but a 26-point second quarter explosion gave the visiting Corcoran five a commanding 44-25 halftime lead and put the game out of reach.
Joe Brown scored 10 for Oswego while Corey Galletta had eight, Josh McRae eight, Mac Porter six, Anthony Samson six, Ryan Patrick four, Dan Montagnola, Eddie Bornheimer and Jake Metcalf two each while Troy Norton had one.
Buc Icers Lose
In a key Division I game the Bucs lost to Liverpool 2-1.
Oswego took a 1-0 lead in the first period as Fred Donabella scored, but it was the lone tally of the night.
Liverpool fought back to tie it at 1-1 by the end of the first and eventually scored the only other goal of the night for the victory.
Jayvee Boys’ Victorious
The Oswego jayvee boys’ basketball team defeated visiting Corcoran 49-38.
The Bucs led after one quarter, 15-13, and never looked back, increasing the lead throughout the rest of the game. Oswego led 23-18 at half, and 31-25 after three quarters.
The lead got as high as 17 points with two minutes left, before the final margin of 11 as the game ended.
Keys to victory for the Bucs were an outstanding defensive effort throughout the game, and very balanced scoring.
Coach Brian Haessig said, “Once again our full-court pressure, and strong 3-2 zone forced the Cougars into many turnovers and poor shot selection. It was a total team effort at the defensive end for the Bucs.â€Â
Pacing the balanced attack was Josh Gillard, with 15 points, including four three-pointers.
Captain Mike Thompson, Connor Riley, and Nate Miller all added eight points. Kevin Carpentier chipped in with five points and many key rebounds.
Brennon Richardson added three, hitting a key three-pointer in the fourth quarter, and playing inspired defense. Eric Henderson rounded out the scoring with two points and a solid all-around game.
Justin Peterson, Autie Ascenzi, Erik May and Steven Hill also played outstanding defense for the Bucs.
The win brought record to 9-7 and the Bucs conclude the season on Friday at Rome Free Academy.
Eighth Grade Girls Win
The Oswego eighth grade girls’ basketball team won game number seven on the year defeating Baldwinsville 38-24.
Scoring for the Bucs were Erica Adkins with eight, Maddy Muckey six, Bella Winklestine, Sydney Knight, Mickey Allen and Kerrigan Cummins with four each.
Also scoring two apiece were Caitlyn McRae, Kennedy Singletary, Morgan Cook and Molly Malone.
Defensively, Sam Cutro, Allison Bathelor, Allison Hare and Emily Mills played well.
