OSWEGO, NY – In one of the most exciting meets in the history of both swimming programs the Oswego High School and Fayetteville-Manlius high school varsity swim teams swam to a rare and seldom seen tie in a 93-93 final on Wednesday.
Coach Rick Klein said, “Neither referees or coaches had ever seen a tie score before. The coaches agreed that it was a fantastic meet, everyone performed beyond their potential and made the meet one of the most exciting they had seen.”
The meet started with the 200 Medley team of Luke Familo, Geoff Taylor, Zak Handley and Kyle Kunzwiler taking second in the event.
The trio of Reeve Callen (1:49.4) Sean Stegmoller (1:57.60) and Jim Dillon (2:08.60) taking first, second and forth in the 200 Freestyle and giving the Buc’s a 16-14 lead. Zach Gerber’s (2:11.56) led the Bucs in the 200 Individual Medley with Geoff Taylor (2:30.09) scoring points for the team.
Drake Becksted won the 50 free with a time of 21.75. keeping the Bucs within two points of F-M.
Also swimming in the 50 free for the Bucs were Alex Kemper (26.53). Josh Saternow (27.18), Alex Shannon (29.53) Nate Wagner (31.22), Tyler Benjamine (32.90), Joe Corradino (34.41), Brian Abbott (34.71) and Brendon Reed (36.25).
Alex Carl and Austin Demont have been working on more difficult and higher degree of difficulty dives and took second and fifth places in the diving event.
The Buc’s butterfly trio of Sean Stegmoller (57.24), Zak Handley (1:04.82) and Dylan Harrington (1:16.38) brought the Bucs back to within eight points of the Hornets.
In the 100 Freestyle, Drake Becksted (47.32) and Reeve Callen (48.75) took first and second and both had qualifying times for the New York State championship meet.
Luke Familo (56.04) Alex Kemper (59.75), Josh Costo (1:03.64), Billy McSweeney (1:04.81), Alex Shannon (1:05.68), Tyler Benjamin (1:14.35), Nate Wagner (1:15.50), Brian Abbott (1:17.49) and Brendon Reed (1:19.69) also swam the 100 freestyle for the Bucs.
In the 500 Freestyle Jim Dillon (5:51.63), Jeremy Galvin (5:58.91) and Josh Saternow (5:59 08) took third, fourth and fifth for the Bucs, all swimming fast enough to qualify for the sectional meet and bringing Oswego to within six points of F-M.
The 200 Freestyle relay team of Drake Becksted, Sean Stegmoller, Zach Gerber and Reeve Callen won the event and brought the Bucs back to within four points.
Kyle Kunzwiler (1:04.25), Luke Familo (1:04.66) and Jeremy Galvin (1:14.14) kept Oswego within striking distance of winning the meet.
In the final event of the meet the Bucs had to win the event as well as take second in the event in order to win the meet.
The team of Drake Becksted, Sean Stegmoller, Zack Gerber and Reeve Callen won the event.
The team of Luke Familo, Kyle Kunzwiler, Jeremy Galvin and Zak Handley, swam an outstanding race and took a third in the event which made the final score 93-93.
Wrestlers Battle, but Fall
Rome Free Academy scored a 63-6 win over the Oswego varsity wrestling team on Wednesday night at Oswego Middle School.
Oswego 160 pounder Mike Ruggio chalked up another win as he scored a 9-3 decision over Karl Wilhemsen. Jacob Rodriguez, at 189, doubled up Robert Fragapane 6-3 for the lone points of the night for the Bucs.
Once again Oswego was struck with giving up forfeit points as RFA picked up unopposed points. At 103 Dillion Stasio won by forfeit while other winners included Collin Newman (112), Antonio DeLuco (125), Mike Madonia (135), James Yates (145) and Tayler Larkin (285).
In the other five matches there were two very exciting and high scoring matchups.
James Redpath of RFA, at 119, edged out an 11-9 verdict over Jordan Attwood while at 130 Oswego’s Matt DiFabio lost 18-12 bo Nicholas Argenzia.
Dan Ellingwood, at 171, lost a 7-0 match to Daniel Secor.
At 140, Jeff Brown of RFA pinned Jordan Pluff in 2:35 while Joshua Knapp, at 152, pinned Eric Susino-Acton in 5:40.
