OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego indoor track teams did quite well in the most recent event while the boys’ hockey team won its sixth straight, the girls’ hockey team split while the wrestlers performed well at the Hilton Tournament.
Also back in action were the varsity basketball teams as they fell to FM.
Indoor Runs Suit Bucs
The Oswego indoor track team closed out its regular season Sunday, with a strong performance at the Bob Grieve Memorial Invitational, held on the newly resurfaced Lusk Field House track at Cortland State University.
Sophomore hurdle standout Cory Keefe, currently ranked second among the section leaders in the hurdles, had an outstanding afternoon, by placing first for the Bucs in the 55 meter hurdles, with an outstanding personal best time of 8.11. Keefe also led off Oswego’s 4 x 400 meter relay of Peter Khamis, David Johnson and Sean Benjamin, which lowered their previous season best by fourteen seconds, to place fourth in their section, with a fine time of 4:12.4.
Junior sprint ace Whitney Ford, ran a strong personal best time of 7.88 in the 55 meter dash, to finish in a tie for second, among the section’s elite. Ford also placed fifth in the long jump, with a leap of 15′ 1/2′.
Sophomore Leah Weiss shattered her previous best in the 600 meter run, with a time of 2:00.42. Other personal bests for the rapidly improving Buccaneers were earned by Matt Bivens in the 1000 meter run, Mallory Gordon in the 600 meter run, Morgan Allen in the shot put, and Lacey Brown in the 55 meter dash.
Peter Khamis, David Johnson, Sean Benjamin and Matt Bivens, turned in a strong effort in the 4 x 200 meter relay, to place second in their section. Other strong efforts for Oswego were turned in by Ashley Deveney in the shot put, McKenzie Demong in the 55 meter hurdles, the Lady Bucs 4 x 200 meter relay of Ariel Bouffard, Deondra Smith, Kaylie Allen and Caylin Ward and Mallory Gordon, Leah Weiss, Ariel Bouffard and Deondra Smith in the 1600 meter relay.
“This team has come a long way since the beginning of the season” noted coaches Jim McCaul and Erwin Dewey. “Their hard work and commitment has led to much success. We are hoping to continue our improvement in the upcoming championship season.”
Oswego will return to action on Sunday, traveling to Hamilton College in Clinton, for the Section 3 Boys’ Track and Field Championships, scheduled to get under way at 9 a.m.
Boys Hockey Wins Sixth Straight
Josh Sova put home the game winning goal with around four minutes remaining to lift Oswego to a 3-2 win over visiting CBA-Jamesville DeWitt in league hockey action on Tuesday night.
Oswego and CBA met for the second time this season and once again the teams battled shot for shot and hit for hit with the Bucs coming away with a win.
The winning goal came as a result of an effort by Fred Donabella and Cody Mariano to get the puck in to scoring position as the Bucs won their sixth consecutive game and moved to 6-3 in league play.
Chris Pike put the Bucs on the board in the first period as he stole the puck and boomed a shot past the Brothers’ goalie for a 1-0 led.
Both teams got on the board in the second as CBA-JD went up 2-1, but Sova knotted it up with just minutes remaining in the second period thus setting the stage for the wide open third period.
In the net Oswego goalie Chase Izyk finished with 17 stops, but he staved off several genuine scoring opportunities. At the other end of the ice Dan DiStefano stopped 22 Bucs scoring attempts.
John Phillips also had an assist for the 9-4 Bucs.
Lady Bucs Split
Oswego Lady Buc skaters split on the weekend with a 3-1 loss to St. Lawrence and a 3-2 win over host Albany Academy.
The Lady Bucs are becoming road warriors as Friday at St. Lawrence the team was outshot 36-11 as St. Lawrence won its first game of the year.
For the Bucs, Karissa Favata had the lone goal.
Sunday after a ride to Albany the Bucs got locked up in a tighter than anticipated game.
Sarah Mancuso scored the game winning goal, assisted by Devyn Hutcheson and Favata with just 14 seconds remaining in the game.
Ally Yule was in net for the Bucs and came up with 26 saves while Madisyn Whalen came in late to make six saves in the final three minutes.
Buc Cagers Falter
It appeared the FM-Oswego boys’ varsity basketball game would be a close one as the teams appeared evenly matched.
The game lived up to expectations in the first quarter with the scored tied at 10-10, but the Hornets exploded for 23 second quarter points while the Bucs mustered just seven and at the intermission it was a 33-17 FM lead.
Oswego outscored the home team in the third quarter, but still trailed 43-35. Both teams went on an offensive tear in the final eight minutes with FM holding a 26-22 edge in a wild closing period for a final of 69-57 in favor of FM.
Jake Metcalf had 15 points Michael Thompson 11 points to pace the Bucs while Ryan Patrick had 10, Corey Galletta nine, Josh Gillard eight and Kevin Carpentier and Dustin Sands two each.
Lady Bucs Have Tough Third
The Oswego Lady Bucs varsity girls’ basketball team trailed just 29-27 at halftime. However FM outscored the Bucs 13-2 in the third quarter en route to a 61-42 win over Oswego. FM had an offensive second half as the Hornets put 32 points on the board while Oswego managed just 15.
Alexis Gillard finished with 14 for the Bucs while Taylor Giglio had eight, Courtney Louis six along with Kelsey Ross with a half dozen, Becca Martin with four and Erica Atkins along with Marisa Dashner two each for the 4-6 Bucs. FM moved to 9-2 on the year with the win.
Wrestlers In Tournament Action
The Oswego varsity wrestling team competed in the Clayton Barnard Tournament at Hilton High School last weekend and put 20 points on the board.
At 119 Jordan Attwood was pinned by C.J. White of Brockport in 1:15 and then lost to Adam Mazzeo of Spencerport in a 12-3 decision.
At 125 Matt DiFabio of the Bucs lost to Seamus Cutler of Corinth in 27 seconds and was also pinned by Rosario Venniro in 3:16.
Jordan Pulff, at 135, lost an 8-1 decision to Jimmy Wiler of Kendall and later fell to Jake Choate of Tonawanda 9-1.
Eric Susino-Acton, at 152, lost to Trent Egenlauf of Spencerport in 3:36 and toe Holley’s Dustin Meredith 6-0.
Dan Ellingwood, at 160, for Oswego scored a 3-0 decision over Jared Mesiti of Brockport and then lost to John Bird of Fairport 2-0. Ellingwood came back with a technical fall over Dan Norris of Hilton in 5:15 and then gained a 9-5 win over Gabe Sobieraski of Kendall. Ellingwood then lost to Shane Kruger of Medina 3-1 before closing with a win over John Bird of Fairport.
Oswego 171 pounder Mike Ruggio defeated Grant Egenlauf of Spencerport 6-1, but then fell via a pin in 1:36 to William Childs of Brockport. Ruggio then lost a hard fought 3-2 decision to Steven Warthling of Tonawanda, but came back with a 7-0 win over Egenlauf to finish his tournament.
At 189, Jacob Rodriguez lost to Jarrett Dolegala of St. Francis 2-1 and a 5-2 decision to Chris Sutton of Greece-Athena.
Lady Buc Jayvees Fall
Oswego lost 42-34 to FM in jayvee girls’ basketball action.
The Bucs started out slow and got out rebounded in the first half to trail 22-10.
But they didn’t give up as Oswego came back in the third quarter cutting the score to 29-24.
Leading scores for Oswego were Marguerite Dillon 9 and Kelly Chetney 7.
