OSWEGO, NY – Shane Bartrum captured the Class AA 189 crown on the mat during the weekend while the number one hockey team in the state was nearly upset by the Bucs and the girls’ basketball and boys’ bowling teams swept their foes.
Meanwhile, the boys’ varsity cagers lost and the girls’ jayvee five picked up a nail-biting win.
Bartrum Gains Title
Oswego senior 189 pounder Shane Bartrum continued his winning ways by earning the title in the 189 division at the Section III Class AA Championships.
En route to the title he earned his 100th career win. In the finals he earned a hard fought 4-2 win over Kevin Cox of Corcoran.
Three other Bucs fell in the semifinal round.
Mike Ruggio lost via a pin in 51 seconds to Lamont Fleming of Corcoran. He eventually finished fourth after losing to James Lang of Baldwinsville.
In the 152 pound division Dan Ellingwood lost 7-1 to Todd Hagger of CNS. He eventually finished fifth by winning 7-4 over Zach Anderson of CBA-JD.
Oswego will have four wrestlers in the Section III Division I Tournament in Utica as Bartrum, Rossi, Ruggio and Ellingwood qualified.
Icers Nearly Upend Top Team
The Oswego High School boys’ varsity hockey team gave the number one team in the state all it could handle on Friday night.
Oswego squared off against 18-0 West Genesee, but the home team had to fight back with two third period goals for a 3-2 victory over the stubborn Bucs.
After two periods the Bucs were ahead 2-1, but in the third period the home standing Wildcats were able to turn things around for the victory.
Mike Brown and Fred Donabella scored for Oswego with John Phillips picked up an assist.
In the net Matt Howard stopped 24 West Genny shots. Meanwhile at the other end of the ice Anthony Militello was given credit for 13 saves.
Oswego moved to 8-7-2 overall and remains in contention for the third play off spot in the league.
Tuesday Liverpool invades the Crisafulli Rink for a 7 p.m. game and Thursday, Baldwinsville visits for senior night as the Bucs close out the home portion of the Oswego High School hockey schedule.
Lady Buc Five Dominates
It was no contest at all when the Oswego High School Lady Buc cagers squared off against visiting Auburn on Friday night at Powers Gym.
Oswego walked out with a commanding 48-13 victory for win number 11 on the year.
The Lady Bucs stormed out to a 13-3 first quarter lead and by intermission it was 24-3. Coach Phil Reed liberally used the bench as the Bucs finished up with the most lopsided win of the year against the 1-15 Maroons.
Lindsay Johnson finished with 13 points for the lone double figure scorer.
Brooke Reifinger scored six while four each were put in by Alexis Gillard, Marissa Canale and Katie Abramski. Emily Barlow and Michelle Canale each had three points while scoring two apiece were Amber Earl, Michaela Auer and Sarah Hill.
Bucs Varsity Falls To Auburn
Auburn broke open the game in the second quarter for a 25-14 lead and was never ahead challenged en route to a 59-34 verdict over the Oswego varsity boys’ basketball team.
The Bucs fell to 3-12 on the season while the home standing Maroons moved to 6-10.
Pacing Oswego were Mac Porter and Jake Metcalf with 14 and 12 points respectively. Anthony Samson had four and Joe Brown two along with two by Corey Galletta.
Bowlers Victorious
Oswego headed to Thunderbird Lanes to meet West Genesee and returned to the Port City with yet another 3-0 victory. Oswego started off with a 934-882 win and followed with a 957-925 decision and capped off the three game set with 1,037-885.
Coach Bob Hoefer noted, “In their final divisional match of the season, the boys’ team took all three games from West Genesee. All eight boys contributed to the victory. Matt Salvador (203, 234) and Cameron Byrne (203, 227) led the way in the first two games while Gavin Gilbert (221), Matt Clemons (220), Zack Delbrocco (205) and Dan Cliff (202) led the way in the third game.â€Â
The girls lost all three points to the second place Wildcats. Junior Paige Blum led the way with a 447 series. Ashlee Lytle had a 424 followed by Christie Hoefer 408.
The boys are 26-4 in division and 40-8 overall while the girls are 10-20 in division and 10-38 overall.
Jayvee Girls Eke Out Win
The Oswego jayvee girls’ basketball team won a tough 43-40 game against Auburn.
Oswego trailed by five with just two minutes remaining.
Coach Jessica Tremblay said, “With a team effort on defensive stops we were able to stop Auburn from scoring. Ally McPherson hit a three to put us within three. With a great presence from both Rebecca Martin and Emily Kolenda they cleaned up the board with 11 rebounds. That helped hold off Auburn.â€Â
Taylor Giglio made a layup to tie the score with 40 seconds. Abbey Henderson made a full court pass to Abby Haessig who scored the layup to put the Bucs up by two. Oswego found Auburn with 30 seconds to go and neither foul shot was hit. Haessig got fouled with 20 seconds to go. She made one of two and the Bucs were up by three.
In the waning moments Auburn missed a three-point attempt and Oswego got the win.
Coach Tremblay said, “It was a collective effort from the players on the court to the players on the bench. Emily. Heagerty, Michaela Kearns, Marissa Dashner, Kelly Chetney and Kelsey Ross were all positive and encouragement to their teammates to help pull off the win.”
Top scores were Giglio with 15, McPherson with seven and Martin with six for the 9-7 Bucs.
