OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego High School hockey season continues for the boys, but ended for the girls.
The wrestlers and basketball players were in action recently also.
Hockey Action
The Oswego Lady Bucs hockey team headed to the Final Four during the past weekend where they were unable to defend the state title.
Oswego lost to top seeded Chazy 5-1 on Friday night and was relegated to the consolation game to meet Potsdam on Saturday afternoon.
The Bucs lost the final game of the year by a 4-0 score.
Meanwhile, the boys’ hockey team split a pair of games on the final weekend of the regular season as the Bucs scored an 8-4 win over archrival Fulton on senior night and then lost the final regular season game of the year at Skaneateles by a 6-4 count on Saturday night.
Against Fulton the Bucs scored two goals in the first period for a 2-0 lead, but in the second the Raiders fought back, but Oswego skated off with a 4-2 advantage.
In the third Oswego lit the goal light four times for an eight-goal offensive explosion.
Austin Tracz and Chris Pike each had four goals on senior night while Fred Donabella, Cody Mariano, John Phillips and Josh Sova all scored.
Sova and Donabella added three assists.
Also picking up assists were Matthew Lloyd, Dan Maniccia, Tracz, Phillips, and Mariano had one assist each.
Chase Izyk stopped 39 Rader shots while at the other end of the ice Kevin Niver had 14 saves and Kara Pafumi 20 stops for a total of 34.
In the match with Skaneateles, the Bucs were up 2-1 after one, but the home standing Lakers scored three in the second and two more in the third while the Bucs scored just one in each of the final two periods.
Pike added two goals while Sova and Tracz each had one. Sova and Tracz also earned assists.
In net, Izyk stopped 20 shots while at the other end of the ice Trevor Diamond stood his ground and had 40 saves.
In Section III Division I wrestling tournament saw two Oswego High School Bucs in competition as Mike Ruggio and Dan Ellingwood represented the Bucs.
Ruggio, at 160, fought his way back to finish strong.
He started the day with an 8-0 major decision over Andrew Osborne of Cicero-North Syracuse before falling via a pin in 2:28 to Fulton’s Nick Woodworth.
The Oswego wrestler fought back as he then scored a 6-4 win over Casey Bright of APW and followed up with a 5-2 decision over Mende Cukalevski.
Kyler Toney of Mexico then pinned Ruggio in 4:04.
Ellingwood wrestled at 171 and started out with a 10-7 win over Ryan VanPatten of Jamesville-DeWitt.
Matt Sowers of Whitesboro pinned Ellingwood in 1:18.
Luck Bush of Cortland also pinned Ellingwood in 3:54.
Oswego Boys Fall to Auburn
The Oswego varsity boy’s basketball team dropped a home game to the Auburn Maroons on Friday night, 65 – 40.
After playing a tough first half, trailing only 26 – 22, the Bucs started out strong in quarter three, tying the game at 26. Soon after that, the Bucs had a string of poor passes and poor decisions, resulting in several turnovers that allowed Auburn to open a commanding lead.
Oswego was never able to recover from this deficit, as the Maroons outscored the Bucs 39 – 18 in the second half.
Sophomore Josh Gillard turned in another strong game as he led Oswego with 13 points and solid defense.
Also contributing were Jake Metcalf with 7, Mike Thompson and Josh McRae 6 each and Corey Galletta and Dustin Sands 4 each.
Lack of any consistent practice time due the inclement weather the past two weeks had a negative impact on the Bucs performance.
The Bucs, 5-10, hosted Hilton on Feb. 12.
Lady Bucs Lose Nailbiter
The Oswego High girls’ varsity basketball team lost a hard fought 54-52 verdict to Auburn to fall to 6-11 on the year.
The Bucs and Auburn appeared evenly matched and the score remained tight throughout.
The Bucs held a 10-9 lead after one and by halftime it was still a nail biting 21-20 advantage.
In the third Oswego again narrowly outscored the Maroons for a 33-30 lead with one quarter remaining.
However, Auburn came back to outscore the Bucs in the last eight minutes for a two-point win.
Taylor Giglio scored 22 while Courtney Louis had 16 and Becca Martin 10 while Marissa Dashner and Kelsey Ross had two points each.
Anna Giannone scored a game high 28 for the Maroons.
Jayvee Girls’ Victorious
Oswego jayvee girls’ basketball players walked out of the gym with their twelfth win of the year as they upended Auburn 47-27.
The game started off close early with a tied score in the first quarter 12-12. However, the Bucs picked up their game and went on a 7-0 run, bringing them up seven going into the half.
With a strong third quarter, Oswego scored 16 points and took the lead.
Auburn was unable to make a comeback and the Bucs took the win.
Leading scorers for Oswego were Marguerite Dillon with 14, Madeline Muckey with 9, Reilly Patrick with 8 and Rachael Purtell with 7.
