Oneonta Overpowers Oswego Women’s Basketball Team

OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego State women’s basketball team fell 81-44 to visiting Oneonta on Saturday afternoon in Max Ziel Gymnasium. Oswego’s loss drops its record to 3-14 overall with a 1-9 mark in SUNYAC competition.

The Red Dragons, who were third in the conference standings entering Saturday’s contest, improved to 12-5, 8-2.

In a nip-and-tuck opening quarter, the Lakers showed resilience, scoring nine of the period’s final 13 points for a 23-21 edge at the buzzer.

Oneonta responded to the deficit with a 13-0 run over the next 4:56 to gain control it would never relinquished. Despite the Lakers’ efforts, the Red Dragons were able to grow their lead to as many as 37 during the second half, en route to the victory.

Oswego was paced by a pair of double-figure scorers, led by Mary Mazzella recording a team high for a second straight game, tallying 15 points. Sorell was the other Laker in that category, recording 14 points on four treys and two freethrows.

For the 10th time this season, Zana Dillard ripped down double-digit rebounds, corralling an even 10 against Oneonta. In her first career start, Nicole SantaMaria had the second most boards for the Lakers, collecting seven.

Also with five or more rebounds on the day were Mazzella (6) and Courtney Ameele (5).

Oswego will now have two days to prep for its next contest, a 5:30 p.m. road game with Geneseo on Tuesday. missing or outdated ad config
