Oneonta Tops Laker Baseball Squad

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Oneonta baseball team generated runs in four different innings to top Oswego State, 5-1, in the conference opener for the Lakers on Friday afternoon.

The Red Dragons (9-8, 2-2 SUNYAC) scored on a ground out in the second inning and a two-out single in the fourth inning to go up 2-0.

The Lakers (7-10, 0-1) tried to rally in the sixth inning after Tyler Baker (So., Hannibal, N.Y.) and Scott Buniak (So., Clifton Park, N.Y.) both reached on infield singles to open the inning. However, a pair of ground balls and a line-out ended the threat without a run.

Oneonta extended the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs with two outs, effectively handing Laker pitcher Jon Stevens (Jr., Chittenago, N.Y.) his first loss in five starts this season.

The Lakers did manage to score in the top of the ninth after Matt Miller (Jr., Montoursville, Pa.) hit a one-out triple to right center and scored on a ground out by Alex Jurczynski (Jr., Schenectady, N.Y).

The Lakers picked up another baserunner with a walk, but the game ended with a strikeout.

Baker led the offense with a pair of hits, while Stevens finished with three strikeouts and two walks in seven innings on the mound.

The same two teams square off in a doubleheader in Oneonta on Saturday with the first pitch at noon. missing or outdated ad config
