The Oswego girl’s cross country team, closed out its successful 2008 dual meet season Wednesday, losing to the strong visiting Lady Redhawks of Central Square, by the score of 21-39. With the loss, Oswego finishes with a fine league record of 3-3, in a very competitive CNYCL American conference.
Freshman standout Mackenzie Robinson, was the top finisher for the Lady Bucs, finishing third overall for Oswego, in a course best time of 15:26, an improvement of 15 seconds. “Mackenzie has been our top runner all season and she proved that again today, racing hard against Melena Speara and Danielle Darling, two of the top young runners in the section,” said coach Jim McCaul.
All three runners challenged the existing course record set by APW’s Jennifer Pernisi in 2005. A rapidly improving Jenna Delaney, shattered her previous course best by 1:17, with an outstanding time of 16:01, to finish second for Oswego and fourth overall, over the challenging 2.5 mile Oswego Middle School course. “Jenna turned in a terrific race,” said McCaul. “She is developing the confidence to push to the front and challenge the leaders and is going to play a big role in our push toward Sectionals.”
Sophomore Lexi Gillard, hampered by a lower leg imjury, placed fourth for Oswego, followed by Bridgette Auyer (17:27), and Michelle Champagne (17:28), who dropped her previous course best by 16 seconds. Other course bests for Oswego were earned by Rachael Demling (45 seconds), Marycate Rice (27 seconds), Emily Lloyd (25 seconds), Brandy Earl (18 seconds), and Danielle Posillipo (6 seconds), with junior Brittany Ross lowering her season best. Katie Abramski, Shandelle Tetro, Kaitlyn Holloway, and Ann Taverni, all turned in strong efforts for the much improved Lady Bucs.
Oswego will return to action Wednesday, traveling to Staley Junior High School in Rome, for the CNYCL American Division Championships.
