OSWEGO – The Oswego State field hockey team fell behind early in the contest and was unable to overcome the deficit in a 3-1 loss against Cortland on Friday afternoon. The Lakers fought hard and battled back in the second half, but only came within two goals of equalizing the score. Kelly Collins led the way for the Laker offense, recording her ninth goal of the year. Oswego State returns to action on October 19 when it visits Morrisville at 4 p.m.
Despite wet conditions, both teams battled hard through the rain and cold temperatures to produce a very entertaining game. Cortland set the tone early in the game, finding the back of the net in the first two minutes. Karly Vdoviak converted on shot from the top of the arc off of a penalty corner pass from Katie Barbagallo. Cortland continued to press the Laker defense, generating numerous scoring chances. The visitors doubled their lead in the 18th minute when Danielle Groneman tipped another Vdoviak shot. Cortland pounced right back on the Laker defense as it found the back of the cage just over a minute later. Groneman struck again for the Red Dragons on a long range shot which found the inside of the left post.
The back-to-back goals from Cortland awoke the Oswego State offense as they managed to generate some chances in the closing minutes of the half. They recorded a flurry of shots on goal, but did not score as Cortland held a 3-0 lead going into the second stanza.
As the rain faded away, Oswego State began to take control of the game, with much of the play happening inside the Red Dragon defensive end. Oswego State finally broke through the Cortland defense when Kelly Collins converted a scramble in front of the Cortland goal. The Lakers continued to press the defense, but were unable to complete the comeback as the game ended in favor of Cortland by a 3-1 score.
With the loss, Oswego State moved to 6-10 on the season and 1-4 in the league, while Cortland advanced to 9-3 overall and 5-0 in the conference.
The Lakers honored their six seniors, Kelly Collins, Jackie Cook, Katie Mazuchowski, Kelsey Moran, Jordan McGuire, and Julie Janusz prior to the game.
