OSWEGO – The Oswego State field hockey team recorded its second consecutive victory on home turf Tuesday afternoon as they dominated play in a 5-3 victory over Elmira College. Leading the Laker attack with two goals was Katie Mazuchowski, while Kelly Collins continued her hot streak, tallying a goal and an assist for the hosts. Oswego State’s next game comes on the road at Wells College on Thursday at 4 p.m.
Oswego State came out flying in the first half as it jumped all over the Soaring Eagle defense. The Lakers recorded three goals within the first 15 minutes of the half and it proved to be too much for Elmira to overcome. The first Laker goal came in the fourth minute off of a rebound when ball was put in the back of the cage by Katie Mazuchowski with Jackie Cook receiving the assist for her third point of the season. Mazuchowski found the back of the net again in the 11th minute on a beautiful deflection from a Kelly Collins shot .
The Lakers’ third tally of the game came in the 15th minute as Alyssa Hare scored her first goal of the season on a mad scramble in front of the Elmira net. The Soaring Eagles managed to break past the strong Laker defense in the 21st minute. Sarah Harden-Marshall converted on a penalty corner pass from McKenna Light. Oswego continued to carry the momentum through the rest of the first half, but came up scoreless and took a 3-1 lead into the second half.
The Lakers continued their strong play into the second half as they managed to find the back of the net for the fourth time in the 41st minute. Ashley Collins was able to put one by a sprawling Elmira goalie for her third goal of the season.
While Oswego continued to lead in all offensive categories, Elmira slowly inched back into the game slowly. Elmira’s McKenna Light and Sarah Harden-Marshall connected again for the second Elmira goal, this time with Light providing the goal for the visitors in the 44th minute. Kelly Collins put a dagger into the hopes of an Elmira comeback as she recorded her seventh goal of the season in the 52nd minute to give the home side a 5-2 lead.
Light recorded her second goal of the game in the 65th minute, but the Soaring Eagles would come up short in the end.
Oswego State outshot Elmira by a count of 31-13 in the game and were awarded 12 penalty corners compared to Elmira’s 10. Julie Janusz recorded five saves in her fourth win of the season for the Lakers, while Lauren Thomas recorded 18 saves in the loss for Elmira.
