SUNY Oswego’s men’s hockey team is the new number 1 Division III team in the nation.  And so is Plattsburgh State, their arch-rivals.

The new poll, reported by USCHO.com, shows the effects of former #1 St. Norbert’s shocking shutout loss.

Says writer Nicholas Jon Wood:

“…those who are tasked to rank its teams were divided in their response, voting conference brethren Oswego and Plattsburgh as co-top teams.

“The Cardinals, however, earned one more first place vote: eight to the Lakers’ seven.”

Here’s the full top 15.

Oswego State battered Plattsburgh in November in the first meeting between the two teams, 5-2.  The Cardinals come to Oswego Jan. 30 for the rematch.

The Lakers’ only loss was a 2-1 defeat against Elmira, which is currently ranked #6 in the Division III poll.

Oswego State will host Brockport on Friday and Geneseo on Saturday. Both games start at 7 p.m. missing or outdated ad config

  1. Out of a roster of 28, 5 players are from New York. 20 are from Canada and the rest are out of state residents. Yes, tuition is higher for these non-resident students but it is still subsidized by New York State taxpayer dollars. Does this seem fair? We are talking about a SUNY div 3 school and these guys are taking positions away from local talent (who’s parents are NYS taxpayers)…

  2. The team is off to a great start with crowds near 2 to 3 thousand a game at the campus center. Coach Gosek is clearly recruiting where the talent is. Besides, there’s a club team for the local talent.

  3. A club team is not the answer. This is about dollars and cents, and club teams do not get nearly the same funding. The larger issue which affect all of SUNYAC, is New York State Taxpayers are flipping the bill for the Canadian players.
