For the second time in four years, the Oswego State Men’s Club Hockey Team hosted the NECHL end of the year tournament. Six of the eight league teams qualified for post season play including Rutgers, Syracuse, Binghamton, Ithaca, Cornell and host Oswego.
In the first quarterfinal game, Binghamton defeated Ithaca 6-2.
In the second quarterfinal game, Oswego defeated Cornell 3-1. The first goal of the game was scored at 12:23 of the second period by Lakers D.J. Mazzoni (West Genesee), assisted by Chris Timmons.
Sophomore Chris Covel added the Lakers’ second goal early in the third period on a pass from James Hollowell. Cornell answered shortly after. However Oswego never gave up and junior Adam Webster sealed the victory for the Lakers late in the third period, with the assist being credited to Rudy Renick. Senior goaltender Anthony Sellitti had 31 saves.
With the victory, Oswego’s next game was #1 Rutgers. The Lakers were the only team to defeat the Scarlet Knights in regular season play and were hoping to have the same outcome during this semi-final game. Rutgers had other ideas and jumped out to a 5 goal lead during the first two periods. Oswego fought back and senior Brad Kervin scored the next two goals on passes from Mike Conklin, Chris Cavanaugh, Rob Lippolis and Greg Molfese, but was unable to overcome the large Rutgers lead. Playing in his last game as a Laker, Sellitti had 33 saves.
The other semi-final game saw Syracuse defeat Binghamton which set up the Rutgers- Syracuse finals.
In the championship game, Syracuse defeated Rutgers 8-4- to claim the 2011 Memorial Cup Trophy which is given in memory of the 3 NECHL players who tragically lost their lives over the past 2 years.
At the annual NECHL coach’s meeting, several Oswego players received awards. Senior goaltender Anthony Sellitti was named the first team all-league goaltender while seniors Brad Kervin and Brandon Clark received all-league honorable mention.
Oswego finished third in the league based on the ACHA standings. Sophomore Rudy Renick was tied for first in the league for game winning goals; senior Brad Kervin was first in the league for short landed goals and sophomore goaltender Aaron Frohm was second in the league for goal against average.
