Oswego State Softball Splits Pair With Geneseo

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The offense woke up in the final two at-bats registering seven runs to help the Oswego State softball team post a 9-3 win in the second game of a twinbill against Geneseo on a chilly Friday afternoon. The Lakers (5-6, 1-1 SUNYAC) salvaged the split after dropping game one, 10-1 in six innings, to the Blue Knights (5-7, 1-1 SUNYAC).

In game one, Geneseo plated three runs in the second inning despite only recording one hit. However, that one hit was a single by Jessica Steubing that drove in two runs. The Blue Knights took a 4-0 lead in the third when they capitalized on a lead-off single by Lexi Williams.

Oswego State scored its lone run of the game in the fourth when Sue Schoff’s (Jr., Little Falls, N.Y.) double into left field brought around Sammie Schroeter (So., Schenectady, N.Y.), who started the inning with a walk.

The Blue Knights then scored three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to make the score 10-1. Mary Bostwick earned the win by giving up just one hit over the course of six innings to go along with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Ashley Snyder (Jr., Pulaski, N.Y.) suffered the loss allowing four runs, one of which was earned, in two innings, while Danielle Groat (Fr., Ballston Spa, N.Y.) worked the final four innings and gave up six earned runs.

Through three innings of the second game, Geneseo held a 1-0 lead after scoring a run in the second inning. The Blue Knights went ahead by two runs in the top of the fourth when Williams drove in Katie Muller, who was pinch running for Stefanie Rosenberg after she led off the frame with a single.

However, Brandy Earl (Jr., Oswego, N.Y.) tied the game for Oswego State in the net at-bat when she blasted a shot over the right field fence for a two-run home run.

Geneseo went up 3-2 after a Steubing RBI, but the Lakers responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth after RBI from Schroeter and Schoff to post their first lead of the day at 4-3.

Snyder struck out the side in the top half of the sixth to get Oswego State back on the attack.

The Lakers added five runs on two hits in their last trip to the plate. Schroeter delivered a pivotal two-out hit when she blooped a single between the left fielder and the shortstop with the bases loaded to drive in two runs. Oswego State scored two more runs after the base knock.

Geneseo loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Snyder struck out the final Blue Knight batter to pick up the win.

Sarah Thayer (Jr., Winthrop, N.Y.) started the game in the circle for Oswego State scattering seven hits over 4.1 innings. She allowed two earned runs, striking out four, and walking two.

Schoff was the only Laker batter to post multiple hits to compliment her two RBI. Schroeter finished the game with three RBI, while Earl also registered two RBI.
