OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team (16-21) heads into the SUNYAC Championships on a positive note after the Lakers posted wins of 4-3 and 3-2 versus visiting Hamilton (9-25) Monday afternoon. Ashley Snyder (Jr., Pulaski, N.Y.) provided a walk-off home run to start the home half of the seventh inning of game one, while also earning the win in the circle.
The Continentals came out swinging right away, as Sam Miller drilled a two-out, two-run home run for the early lead.
The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth when Brooke Radley (Jr., Pulaski, N.Y.) doubled to the left field fence to bring around Katie Bredin (So., Oneonta, N.Y.) from first base. The two-out rally continued as Laura Kahn reached on an infield single and later stole second to move into scoring position. Shannon Baker (Sr., Hanniball, N.Y.) then delivered a two-RBI single into center field to put Oswego State out in front, 3-2.
Hamilton tied it up in the sixth after Ellie Kiernan ripped a two-out RBI single into center field.
The Lakers loaded the bases in the bottom half of the frame with two outs, but the Continentals got out of the jam by inducing a ground out to the pitcher. Hamilton responded by getting the first two batters on base, but could not move the runners because of two pop outs and a strikeout.
The game looked headed into extra innings, but pitcher Ashley Snyder ripped a solo home run into right field to start the seventh inning for her second walk-off homer of the season. She scattered six hits over seven innings, walking four and striking out five. Hamilton pitcher Kelly Leonard gave up 12 hits, but got some help from her defense as the Continentals turned two well-timed double plays and allowed four runs.
Oswego State’s offensive momentum carried over into game two, as Dee Apps (So., Camillus, N.Y.) hit a solo home run over the center field fence in the first inning. The Lakers added two more runs in the second after Baker laced a double just inside third base to plate Maureen Lenehan (Fr., Syracuse, N.Y.) and Sarah Thayer (Jr., Winthrop, N.Y.).
Hamilton got both runs back in the fourth with RBI knocks from Summer Bottini and Leonard to get the Continentals back in the game. Hamilton had its chances to tie the game in the late innings, but stranded runners on third in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Justine Abramowski (Fr., Levittown, N.Y.) ended the game when she threw out a runner trying to steal second base with two outs, as Baker eventually applied the tag.
Thayer picked up the win after striking out seven, walking two, and giving up seven hits for two runs. Bottini suffered the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in the first two innings.
