OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team (4-8, 1-1 SUNYAC) knocked off Cortland (7-9, 1-1 SUNYAC) in game one of a doubleheader, 4-2, to snap a 36-game Red Dragon winning streak on Friday.
Cortland responded by winning the nightcap, 8-0, in five innings. The victory marked the Lakers’ first over Cortland since April 25, 1987.
Oswego State posted a crooked number in the top of the first after Tori Trovato (Fr., Fulton, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to start the game followed by a Sammie Schroeter (Jr., Schenectady, N.Y.) walk before a Red Dragon throwing error scored Trovato. Nicole Ouellette (Sr.,Castleton, N.Y.) then delivered the first of two hits when she singled up the middle plating Schroeter and Dee Apps (Jr., Camillus, N.Y.). The three-run inning came to an end when a Laker base runner was called out for leaving second early.
Cortland fought back by scoring two runs of its own in the bottom of the frame, which began with a leadoff homerun by Diane Cork. Later in the inning, Jamie Bucci scored on a wild pitch. The Red Dragon rally came to a halt when Apps caught a line drive and doubled up the runner at third base.
After a highly offensive first inning, the game became a pitcher’s duel between Oswego State’s Alexis Nasca (Fr., Hamburg, N.Y.) and Cortland’s Sarah Salamone. The two pitchers pitched shutout ball until the sixth inning when Oswego State was able to tack on an insurance run when Katie Bredin (Jr., Oneonta, N.Y.) scored on a wild pitch.
Cortland’s bats woke up in the second game, as the Red Dragons blasted five homeruns from five different players. In the third inning of a 1-0 contest, Alicia Hibbard hit a 2-run homerun to start a streak of four straight homeruns, which helped Cortland post six runs in the third.
The Red Dragons tacked on another run in the fourth to make the score 8-0 when Hibbard singled home Lucia Meola. Oswego State was unable to extend the game when it was held scoreless in the fifth inning.
Nasca suffered the loss, while Amber Corrigan posted the win after striking out six Lakers over the course of three innings.
The Lakers host Cazenovia in a doubleheader on Monday starting at 3:30 p.m.
