Oswego State Women’s Basketball Opens 2012 With 72-51 Loss To NYU

NEW YORK – The Oswego State women’s basketball team (7-4) opened the second half of their season with a 72-51 loss to New York University (7-2) Monday afternoon at the NYU Invitational. The Violets controlled the boards, holding a 52-29 advantage. The Lakers will play Farmingdale State on Tuesday at 1 p.m. to close out the tournament.

The Violets held an early 9-3 lead before Meagan Stover (Jr., Lake George, N.Y.) and Kassie Kleine (Jr., Cazenovia, N.Y.) nailed back-to-back treys to even the score four minutes into the game. With NYU leading 17-14 and 14:49 remaining in the half, it went on a pivotal 13-3 run over the next five minutes to take a 30-17 lead. Oswego State pulled to within eight points on two separate occasions, but trailed 45-32 at the break.

Kari Kipper (Jr., Loudonville, N.Y.) drained a jumper with 16:37 to play to make the score 47-36, but the Violets scored 11 unanswered points over the next five minutes until a pair of Jenna Rossi (Sr., Phoenix, N.Y.) free throws ended the stretch to make the score 58-38. However, the deficit proved to be too much to overcome as NYU cruised to the victory.

Kayla Ryan (Sr., Schaghticoke, N.Y.) paced Oswego State with 14 points followed by 12 points from Lauren Nunziato (So., West Sand Lake, N.Y.). The Violets’ Bianca Storts scored a game-high 23 points to go along with eight rebounds. Alexis Doherty and Tana Bertino also reached double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively, while Shelby Coon grabbed 11 boards and Cara Bonito dished out seven assists.

Offensively, the Lakers ended the game shooting 17-for-60 (28.3 percent) from the field compared to NYU shooting 26-for-58 (44.8 percent). Defensively, Oswego State won the turnover battle by a margin of 20-16.
