Colleen McCready (Jr., Pittsford, N.Y.) made a pair of layups late in the second half to help the Oswego State women’s basketball team hold off Potsdam 57-56 on Friday night in Potsdam. McCready recorded a team-high 18 points, and was one of four Lakers to score in double figures. The Bears’ Cortney Poirer led all scorers with 26 points on 11-of-20 shooting. The Lakers, who improved to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the SUNYAC, will face Plattsburgh on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Potsdam fell to 1-11 on the season and 0-5 in league play after suffering its third straight one-point loss.
The Bears held a 24-22 lead with 5:42 on the clock in the first half before two Traci Bacon (Jr., Massena, N.Y.) treys and a layup by McCready put Oswego State on top 30-24 with 3:53 remaining. Potsdam countered with five straight points until a Kayla Ryan (So., Schaghticoke, N.Y.) free throw closed out the stanza, giving the Lakers a 31-29 heading into the locker room.
Head coach Tracy Bruno’s squad established a seven-point, 47-40 advantage midway through the second half after two baskets in the paint by Meagan Stover (Fr., Lake George, N.Y.) sandwiched a basket by Bacon. The Bears clawed back into the contest, though, when Cortney Poirier converted a steal into layup for the 53-51 lead and an Oswego State timeout. Out of the timeout, the Lakers went on a small 6-0 run to make the score 57-53 with 1:02 to play. Poirier hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one point, but neither team scored the rest of the way as Oswego State posted a 57-56 victory.
Traci Bacon and Kayla Ryan contributed 11 points each for the Lakers, while Kristen Diglio (Jr., Syracuse, N.Y.) added another 10. Oswego State struggled from the charity stripe going 8-for-19 (42.1 percent), but was able to shoot 7-for-17 (41.2 percent) from behind the three-point arc. Aimee Kellicutt joined Coutney Poirier in double-digits with 15 points. Potsdam shot 41.0 percent (25-for-61) from the floor, but went 3-for-17 (17.6 percent) from three-point range and only went to the free throw line five times.
