UTICA, N.Y. – Forward Carly Henderson (So., Markham, Ont.) netted the game-winning goal at 3:15 of overtime to give the Oswego State women’s ice hockey team a 3-2 win over Utica College on Friday afternoon.
The win improved the Lakers’ record to 2-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in ECAC West play. The loss dropped the Pioneers record to 2-3-0 overall and 0-3-0 in ECAC West play.
Forward Kelly Collins (Sr., Fairport, N.Y.) forced the game into extra time after scoring the game-tying goal with just one second remaining in the third period. The Lakers had a two-skater advantage following an interference penalty allowing Oswego State to pull starting goalie Catherine Cote (So., Val D’or, Quebec) with 30 seconds remaining in regulation.
Collin’s game-tying goal was set up by a faceoff win by forward Jillian Bergeron (Sr., Brockville, Ont.). Bergeron got the puck to defender Kathryn Sbrocchi, who shot the puck on net that was blocked aside by Utica goaltender Marissa Hotaling. Collins collected the puck and beat Hotaling with just one second remaining in regulation to force overtime.
Henderson ended the game and gave the Lakers their second conference win of the season more than half way through the overtime period. Forward Megan Howe (So., Stratford, Ont.) recorded a shot on net that was saved by Hotaling, but Henderson was in position to corral the rebound and beat Hotaling for the game-winning goal.
Forward Melissa Seamont (So., North Bay, Ont.) netted the game’s first goal at 1:14 of the first period. Defenders Jocelyn St. Clair (So., Cambridge, Ont.) and Chelsea Hunt (So., Brockport, N.Y.) assisted on Seamont’s goal.
The Pioneers scored the next two goals on the power play to take the 2-1 lead at 8:04 of the third period. Utica tied the game at 1:23 of the second period on Brittany Dellechiaie’s power-play goal. Kelsey Dowdall and Carmen Johnson were credited with the assists on the play.
Utica took the lead on Nicole Schwartz’s goal, while also on the power play with Roy and Meghan McMahon earned the assists on the goal. The Pioneers finished 2-for-6 on the power play.
The Lakers heavily outshot Utica, 48-24, and won the majority of the faceoffs. Cote finished with 22 saves to earn her first win in net this season for the Lakers. Hotaling finished with 45 saves in a losing effort for the Pioneers.
The Lakers will host Utica College on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Campus Center Ice Arena in the second game of a home-and-home series between the two teams.
