Oswego State women’s ice hockey team wins OT thriller

Oswego, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team won a thriller 3-2 over Castleton State College in overtime as Megan Hagg scored the game-winner 2:31 into the extra period.

Lizzy Marks assisted on the deciding goal, helping the Lakers to a 2-0 mark on the season with two wins in the Oswego State Classic.

It is the first time since the 2009-10 season that Oswego has opened the season 2-0.

Ironically, the Lakers’ first win that season was against the Spartans of Castleton State.

Castleton State opened the scoring at the 14:14 mark of the first period when Lisa Kilroy found the back of the net off a pass from Nicoline Jensen. Oswego answered right back with Olivia Boersen scoring her third goal in a two-day span just 1:59 later.

Leslie Jarvis was credited with the assist on Boersen’s third goal of the young season.

The Lakers doubled up the Spartans in shots in the opening period, 16-8.

Mady Paul gave Oswego the go-ahead goal at 3:54 in the second period. Paul beat the goal on her left side from a Melissa Seamont pass.

In the second, the Lakers nearly tripled Castleton State in shot attempts, winning the battle 17-6.

The Spartans found a way to even the score midway through the third. Castleton’s Brie Narodowy scored with 7:46 left in the game off passes from Rachel Bombardier and Samantha McNeil.

Despite outshooting Castleton 47-20 in regulation, overtime was needed to decide a victor.

The Lakers starter Bridget Smith earned the win in the pipes, making 19 stops in 62:31 while yielding two scores.

Oswego will return to action at 3 p.m. next Saturday when it travels to take on the Bears of Potsdam.
