BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Despite not playing since October 25, the Oswego State women’s soccer team claimed the ECAC Upstate New York Championship, 2-1, over Brockport behind two goals from forward Nikki Liadka (So., Liverpool, N.Y.), avenging a 2-1 loss to the Golden Eagles earlier this season on Friday afternoon. Liadka was named the Most Outstanding Player for her efforts.
The Lakers finish the season at 11-8 overall, their best record since 1996 when the team went 14-5 overall, and claim the second ECAC Upstate New York Championship in program history. Oswego State won the ECAC Upstate title in 1994 when it tied Binghamton, 0-0, but prevailed 4-3 on penalty kicks.
Liadka tallied her first goal of the game at 3:56 and netted the game-winning goal at 72:55 to give the Lakers a two-goal edge. Oswego State took the early lead less than four minutes into regulation after Liadka dribbled past three Brockport defenders and beat Brockport goalie Erin Asquith.
Liadka struck again in the second half to take a two-goal lead with a shot from 25 yards out that found its way past Asquith for the goal. Both goals from Liadka were unassisted.
The Lakers registered 15 shots and nine shots on goal for the game. Liadka finished the season with 12 goals and five assists for 29 points.
The Golden Eagles cut the Laker lead to one at 77:41 on a goal by Katie Gildemeyer off an assist by Arielle Schneider. Off a direct kick, Schneider found Gildemeyer, who fired a shot on goal that was misplayed by Oswego State goalkeeper Emily Varoneir (Jr., Miller Place, N.Y.).
The Laker defense limited the Golden Eagles to just one shot on goal the rest of the game. Brockport’s last scoring chance came at 86:11, when Gina Laing served a shot on net, but Varonier came up with the save to preserve the victory for the Lakers.
Varonier finished the game with nine saves to earn the victory in net for Oswego State. Asquith finished with seven saves for the Golden Eagles.
Brockport had seven corner kick attempts, while Oswego State had two corner kick attempts, but neither team was able to generate any offense as a result.
