Remember the area around the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Facility is off limits to boating. The restricted area stretches 1,000 yards offshore and extends from the Alcan plant to the Sunset Bay area along Lake Ontario, east of the city of Oswego.

With the heavy rainfall last week, the water level has been running between 9,000-11,000cfs for the last few days. Sunday was a nice day and even with higher water levels, driftboats were seen working the waters behind the hotels. Steelhead, rainbows and browns are taking trout beads, nightcrawlers, wax worms, egg sacs and fathead minnows.

What a difference a day can make. On Sunday it was warm and sunny and on Monday it was cold and snowy. We picked up over a foot of new snow and slush ice was a factor in the lower end of the river. With the heavy snow and white out conditions most of the anglers we spoke with reported having a tough day and did not do nearly as well as they did on Sunday. More snow showers are in the forecast for Thursday and Friday and possible lake effect snow into the weekend so please check the weather before making the long trip.

The area received more snow and strong winds overnight. This has brought another slushy day on the lower end. Most of the fishing will be from Pineville upstream today based on the wind and snow. We are supposed to see a little warmer temperatures after tomorrow and hopefully that will cut down on the slush.

Winter is officially here and the low cold water on the Salmon River has really slowed the activity down. The current water flow is a lean 335cfs and with little or no current in most of the big holes, the trout have settled in for their winter naps and occasionally wake up to feed. We land two to five per trip which really is not that bad. When the fish do bite, they are hitting beads, egg sacs and egg pattern flies. Blue, white and pink have been the best colors. Some anglers are hooking fish on stoneflies too.
Oneida Lake report:
The cold weather has produced some ice along the shoreline of parts of the lake. The shore walleye fishing is over for the season. There are reports of 1†to 4†of ice on Big Bay with some colder temperatures in the forecast. Please use extreme caution with the early season conditions.
Sandy Pond report:

The conditions on the pond are very good. The rain last week did not impact the ice and the little coating of snow we have gotten since then has made walking on the ice easier – it was extremely slippery. Currently there is about 8 inches of ice in many areas and if we don’t get a lot of snow in the next few days, we will likely have a foot of ice by next week. The perch fishing has been decent and there hasn’t been much to report on the northern pike bite as yet.

The snow has been falling and we have received 13 inches of new snow since yesterday. Our season total is 86 inches. All trails are open with a 12-18 inch base and a powder/packed powder surface.
According to Winona Forest Recreation Association:
Good news for a change! We have over 10 new inches of medium density snow. Depending on conditions we may begin grooming today. Winds however are supposed to gust as high as 40mph and wind chill factors could be dangerous so grooming will begin when conditions are suitable. Hessle Road remains closed by DEC from Bargy to Wart for bridge reconstruction.

There have been some changes to our system this year.  Red Schoolhouse Road, by the gas line, please be careful, go slow, and stay on the trail. Co. Rte. 16 in Texas, by the bridge (Gill Rd.) the trail has changed. Now you need to go a little farther before you duck off the road. Co. Rte. 1 by Larkin Road, there have been many changes to avoid the water. Please pay attention.

We have received approximately 10″ of new snow and groomers are out north and south. We still need more snow but trails will be greatly improved. It is sunny and VERY cold this a.m. -4 degrees at 8 a.m.
