Remember the area around the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Facility is off limits to boating. The restricted area stretches 1,000 yards offshore and extends from the Alcan plant to the Sunset Bay area along Lake Ontario, east of the city of Oswego.

Conditions along the river have remained about the same. The water level is fluctuating between 6,000-8,000cfs. The ice has mostly cleared from the mouth of the river and driftboats can be seen often behind the hotels. Brown trout are taking minnows, bucktail jigs, egg sacs and casting spoons. Look for some steelhead action near the dam and down through the river to Bridie Manor. Maribou jigs, moussies, minnows, trout beads, stone flies and woolly buggers are good choices of bait.

With the spring like conditions, the snow is melting quickly so it’s no surprise there is an increase in water level (750cfs). The mild weather is expected to continue for the remainder of the week and anglers should take advantage of the conditions. The majority of anglers we spoke with who fished the upper end of the river between Altmar and Pineville reported having a good day. The Lower Fly Fishing Area, Schoolhouse Pool, Ellis Cove and Trestle Pool all produced action. The anglers we spoke with who fished the lower end of the river reported getting into a few fresh fish. They worked hard for the ones they got while fishing the Staircase, Town Pool and 81 Hole.

We have about a dozen people on the run today. Most of the anglers are reporting some action. Most are using float rigs with beads, eggs or pink worms. I did see a few folks spey fishing that landed some fish in the Meadow. I fished for about two hours in the Upper Clay and Spring Hole and went 3 for 5 on beads and one on a pink worm. The water flow is up to 750cfs so today should be a good day.
Oneida Lake report:

Ice fishing on Oneida Lake has been good, but safety has to be a concern with the warmer daytime temperatures we are having. Clearly stay away from any tributary areas…the ice is never dependable when you have moving water. Also be cautious of large areas of wetness and water accumulated atop the ice. The fishing for both perch and walleyes at about mid-lake on the buoy line at 125, 123 and 121 in 28 to 32 feet of water has been good. Just a reminder that walleye season ends on March 15.
Sandy Pond report:

There is still plenty of ice on the pond and the weather forecast is good for the next few days. With the warmer temperatures, however, things can change quickly so use caution at this time of year. Enjoy pike fishing until March 15 using large minnows on tip ups. Look for yellow perch using small minnows and small jigs tipped with spikes are taking perch and panfish.

The extended forecast is calling for temperatures in the 40s and no significant snowfall at this point. It does not look good for continuing our season until the end of the month if this weather pattern holds but conditions are good at the moment.

Temperatures this week are expected to be in the 40s with lots of sunshine. The trails currently have a 16-20 inch base with a loose granular surface.

The warmer weather and high sun are taking their toll on the trails. Trails over the weekend were in somewhat poor shape with spring conditions. With temperatures in the 40s most of the week, trail closures are expected.

It looks like it’s over for another year. The temperature and precipitation just isn’t what we’re looking for. It’s not worth running from snow patch to snow patch; we’ve had enough damage this year already. Please respect the landowner and remember these are snowmobile trails….not trails for 4-wheelers or dirt bikes.
