Phelps Scores Last-Lap Win at Brewerton

BREWERTON, NY May 28,2010 (By Dave Medler) – Just when it looked like the DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds at the Brewerton Speedway couldn’t get any better after last week’s green to checker feature they out did themselves this past Friday night. Jimmy Phelps out of Baldwinsville, NY used a last lap pass getting by Pat Ward exiting turn four to collect the 35 lap victory. With his win Phelps increases his hold on first place in the point standings.

Other winners on Family Autograph Night were, Larry Wight NAPA Late Models, Kevan Cook IMCA Modifieds, Joe Garafolo Beaver River Distribution Mod Lites and Stephen Denton in the 4-Cylinder Super Stocks.

Rob Hile Out ran Johnny Hill to be scored the leader in the opening lap of the 35 lap DIRTcar Big Block Modified feature.

On lap 5 Hile ran alone out front as Chad Phelps, Jim Witko, Hill and Larry Wight ran in close quarters for top-five spots.

With 10 laps on the SUNY Canton Scoreboard, Hile still set the pace but he now had company as Phelps closed the gap on the leader. Behind the top-two, Ryan Phelps and Witko ran side by side with Wight right there to complete the top-five.

By lap 15 Hile once again stretched out his lead as he was on rails running the top almost a straight away ahead of Chad Phelps, , Witko, Wight and Ryan Phelps.

At halfway and no yellows Hile was still looking for the upset win as he was still out front on cruise control. Witko and Chad Phelps ran side by side for 2nd with Wight and Ryan Phelps still showing in the top-five.

When starter Dave Farney gave the 10 to go sign to the field, Hile was still running the cushion in the lead, but now Witko started closing the gap. Pat Ward looked to be on a mission as he was in 3rd and took off after the top-two.

On lap 29 Ward moved into 2nd just before a yellow came out for a slowing Michael storms who had a right rear go down. Storms would make the tire change and return.

When the green came back out Ward was able to move by Hile to be scored the new leader. While Ward took the lead Jimmy Phelps was able to get by Hile and set sail for Ward.

With Ward running the bottom, Phelps had to go to the top if he wanted a shot at the win. On the last lap exiting turn two Phelps held a slight advantage going down the back straight. Going into three Phelps threw it hard against the cushion which gave him a great run coming off of four to be the first under the checkers for the popular win. Pat Ward, Jim Witko, Alan Johnson and Chris Hile rounded out the top-five.

What made Chris Hile’s run remarkable was, during the autograph session they discovered a broken transmission and had to be pushed back to the pits. The team thrashed and put another one in, in time for the feature.

“I knew we were good, we needed that yellow. Pat (Ward) was just good enough I couldn’t run him up off of two; he kept shutting the door off on us. I had one shot on that last lap, either beat him into four or go off the bank to show him my wheels,” said Jimmy Phelps about his last lap pass that put the J&B Installations No.99j in victory lane for the second straight and third time in 2010 at the Brewerton Speedway.

Phelps also related that they needed that last yellow or they would have run out of time. He couldn’t say enough about his team because the week before at Fulton Speedway that same car was severely damaged at Fulton Speedway.

In the 20 lap NAPA Late Model feature AJ Kingsley would lead the opening lap before Harry Halliday took over the top spot one lap later. On lap 5 Larry Wight rim riding would drive around Halliday to take over the lead of the race.

At the halfway point Wight was still leading using the top of the speedway as Dale Caswell kept pace using the bottom. Gordy Button, Aaron Jacobs and Dave Talbot ran a distant third through fifth.

On lap 13 while leading Wight jumped the cushion in turns one and two allowing Caswell to shoot by to be scored the new leader. A quick yellow on lap 16 would spell the difference in the race. On the restart Wight went back to the cushion to drive around Caswell to retake the lead on lap seventeen. Once out front Caswell was never able to challenge as Wight was the first under the checkers. After a bunch of second place finishes it was Wight’s first ever NAPA Late Model win at the Brewerton Speedway. Gordy Button was able to get by Caswell to finish second, Caswell, Aaron Jacobs and Dave Talbot rounded out the top-five.

In the Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lite 20 lap feature, teammates Clayton Brewer III and Matt Magner would swap the lead back and forth through most of the race. While the battle up front kept changing, Joe Garafolo was working his way to the front from his 14th starting spot. Garafolo would take the lead on lap fourteen. Over the finals laps Garafolo was able to hold off Brewer and Magner for his second win in a row. Andrew Schartner and Tim Devendorf finished fourth and fifth.

Brandon Carvey led the first two laps of the 20 lap IMCA Modified feature before Dale Caswell took over the lead on lap three. Caswell’s lead only lasted 2 laps when Kevan Cook was able to grab the top spot. Once in the lead Cook went onto the win. Mexico High School student Brandon Carvey grabbed 2nd by inches over Josh Van Tassell. Dale Caswell and Mike Smith rounded out the top-five.

Stephen Denton used a lapped car as a pick to grab the lead from Aaron Backus on lap 7 of the 15 lap 4-Cylinder Super Stock feature that went green to checker. Denton was on cruise control till the last lap exiting turn four when something went wrong under the hood of his car. Luckily Denton was able to hold on to the win by inches over Chuck Powelczyk and Backus. Jim Money and Wendall Washington finished fourth and fifth.
