Plattsburgh Downs Oswego State Men’s Soccer Squad

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men’s soccer team (1-8-1, 0-2-1 SUNYAC) was unable to keep its streak going against rival Plattsburgh (11-1-0, 2-1-0 SUNYAC), as the Lakers lost 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Laker Field. The loss ends a four-year unbeaten streak (3-0-1) for Oswego State against the Cardinals.

The Lakers got the first good look at a goal inside of 10 minutes when a couple of nice one-touch passes ended with a through ball to sophomore Ryan Purdy (Stormville, N.Y.). Purdy, however, struck a shot that traveled just wide.

Plattsburgh got the scoring started in the 16th minute when Plattsburgh’s Matt Hamilton buried a free kick from 20 yards out into the corner of the net. After the Cardinal goal, the physicality on the field picked up immensely.

Oswego State finished the first half with 13 fouls, compared to just five for Plattsburgh.

Plattsburgh doubled its lead in the 56th minute, as Jarred Antonucci  scrambled in the box to collect the ball and fired a shot that Laker goalie Pat Breen (Sr., Palmyra, N.Y.) got a hand on, but could not keep from going in the goal.

Oswego State’s best chance to cut the Plattsburgh lead in half came in the 79th minute when Purdy ripped a free kick from roughly 20 yards out that was stopped by a diving Andy Heighington. The Lakers outshot their opposition 4-1 in the second half, but could not net a marker.

Breen registered one save for the Lakers, and Heighington recorded four stops on the day.

The Lakers are back on their home field on Friday, Oct. 5 against Fredonia at 4 p.m. in the “Kick it to Cancer” game. missing or outdated ad config
