‘States’ Weekend for Buc Athletes

OSWEGO, NY – It is “States” Weekend for Oswego High School athletes.

This weekend Oswego High School will be represented at four different sports venues as the hockey and bowling teams along with individual swimmers and a track competitor will all be seeking honors at the state tournament level.

Swimmers Jimmy Dillon, Zach Gerber, Drake Becksted, Reeve Callen and Alex Kemper will be at Erie Community College representing Oswego in the NYSPHAA Swimming Championships.

On Saturday the swimmers will vie at Erie Community College, just outside of Buffalo, in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Swimming Championships.

Oswego’s Drake Becksted is seeded first in the 50 and 100 freestyle events and two Buc relay teams, in the 200 and 400 freestyle races will also be in competition. Representing the Bucs along with Becksted will be Reeve Callen, Zach Gerber, Alex Kemper and Jimmy Dillon.

In track action Cory Keefe will vie in the 55 meter hurdles at Cornell University as the top indoor track and field competitors in the state will gather for the season-ending championship event. Keefe is among the elite in the 55 meter hurdles and returns to the state level competition after tremendous success during the past two seasons.

In hockey action the Oswego High School Bucs will play host to Section X Salmon River at the Crisafulli Rink at Fort Ontario at 7 p.m. on Saturday night.  The Bucs captured the Section III crown last week with a 5-0 shutout of Skaneateles at Utica while Salmon River outscored Ogdensburg 5-1 on Monday at Clarkson’s Cheel Arena to advance to the State Quarterfinal.

The winner of the game is headed to Utica for the NYSPHAA Semifinal next Saturday with the finals slated for the following day.

The members of the Section III champion team included a dozen seniors.

 Though it might seem difficult to believe this was the first Bucs sectional ice title since the 2004-05 season.

Members of this years’ championship squad included  seniors Christopher Bonner, Cody Mariano,  Dan Maniccia, Davie Mathes, James Sperino, Jeremy Purce, John Phillips, Jonathan Kaplewicz,  Josh Sova, Joshua Cooley, Trent Yule and Tyler Grimshaw; juniors Chase Izyk, Daniel Ryan, David Culeton, Jacob Anderson, David Walpole, Kody Bristol and Travis Kearns along with sophomores Brandon Tacz, Hunter Izyk, Jacob Oleyourryk, Mitchell Schrader, Sean Mooney and Zachary Zerrahn and frosh Anthony Donabella and Christopher Jadus.

Meanwhile, the boys’ bowling team also captured the Section III crown.

They will be headed to Waverly, N.Y. for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Bowling Championship.

The Bucs had an outstanding season and were unbeaten in league competition while capturing the Festival of Lights Tournament in Niagara Falls and the coveted Section III crown.

Included on the roster are Cameron Byrne, Zach DelBrocco, Gavin Gilbert, Joe Clavelli, Matt Clemons, Dan Cliff, Kevin Goodale, Jim Rose, Ethan Simmons and David Woolworth.
